Fuel tender
Title:  Fuel tender
Description:  BN, and subsequently, BNSF, have tried fuel tenders at various times. BNs effort in the 80s was to extend the distances between fueling stops, and modified several tanks so they could fuel while en route. One of the tender sets is pulling this 66 car eastbound through Hoffman Av as it starts down the river toward La Crosse. As an added bonus, the leader is one of the BN tiger stripe units. The power is otherwise notable in that the two GP 50's and cabless B30-7A represent common road power in the era before 6 axle units took over everything.

By the hour
Title:  By the hour
Description:  The big new thing at this time was "power by the hour", where railroads would lease diesels, with payment based on horsepower hours. Since technology now allowed for a real time record of actual usage, it was possible for this type of billing, more accurate than a HP times how long the engine was gone billing. BN leased a group of B39-8s on this basis, and we see two of them at Cicero, under the mercury vapor lamps, making the colors a little off.

Away from home
Title:  Away from home
Description:  For years before UP merged CNW, they pooled power, dating back to streamliner days. In the modern era, the pool was on freights, most often pig trains. Sometimes UP would commandeer a unit for something else. Im not sure if thats what happened here, or this was a bad order unit that got set out-GP50s were high priority power in those days. Either way, this one looks lost and forlorn on a rainy siding in Central City.

This is different
Title:  This is different
Description:  CNW power was not common on the Tier. On the Chicago Line, youd see it fairly often on PXSE or NPSE, both connections off Union Pacific that used the Northwestern to bridge the gap from Fremont Neb to Chicago, with the power running through. These guys got lost somehow, and wound up on OIBU, stopped here at Owego to check for a hot journal on one of its 119 cars, the train having tripped the detector at MP 230.45 near Campville. Too bad it wasnt an hour earlier-the light would have been ideal!!

Bridging the gap
Title:  Bridging the gap
Description:  Conrail, CNW, and UP participated in a run through train from Elkhart Ind to North Platte on the UP, symbolled ELNP. To get through Chicago, it used the Indiana Harbor Belt to get over the gap from CR to CNW. Here it is with all three component roads power having just rolled under the BN. This type of consist was typical.

All dressed up
Title:  All dressed up
Description:  And going out shortly. This Southern GP 50 looks sharp still in its "tuxedo" scheme, and is earning its keep. It will shortly be rolling out to Chicago with the two units behind it.

Still Alcos
Title:  Still Alcos
Description:  The C424s would stay in service for a few more years on the D&H, as CP had then quite a stable of them, and they fit right in with CP's power. One is at the fuel pad with a group of NS units, up from Potomac Yard.

Interesting power
Title:  Interesting power
Description:  Despite the dwindling variety of diesels offered by the two remaining builders by 1990, there was still a remarkable variety on NS, and they seemed to run systemwide, and onto connections. The line up at the East Binghamton fuel pad this day bears this out, as we see a GP 59, B32-8, and GP 50, models that were not huge sellers compared to the SD40 types and C30-7s that pervaded most of the big roads rosters at that time.
