Ex D&H U23 |
Description: |
When Guilford took over the D&H, they moved much of the power around their roster, with the D&H units being most affected. An example of that is the two units leading this train. Once D&H U23Bs, they are now lettered for the Maine Central. It became a sore point at the D&H that Guilford kept all the newer power when it let the D&H go in 1988. |

Guilford trio |
Description: |
BUME behind three Guilford painted units rolls along the rock wall next to NY 17 just east of Corning with 48 cars. This was a challenging shot for an eastbound, as you had to stand on the shoulder of westbound NY 17, an expressway. Timing had to be good, as you could not stop here long. I got it right this sunny morning, catching three Guilford units, one each for the component roads, though the leader and trailing units had been "transferred" away from the D&H. |

BUME with Guilford power |
Description: |
This view of BUME behind a solid set of Guilford power is notable for two reasons. First, a solid set of power on the D&H was notable any time it happened, though Guilford still managed to mix up the power, with one unit from each of their roads. Interestingly, the first and last units started out on the D&H, despite now being lettered for MEC and B&M. The other reason is that this shot gives an overview of the rail remnants of Corning as they appeared in the late 1980s. This is taken from the NY 414 overpass, looking west. The train is on the former Erie main, which is a relocation of the original main which ran down what is now NY 352 through downtown Corning. The "new" 1951 Erie station was just to the left of the train where it curves out of the photo. The empty right of way to the right of the train was the DLW, which was abandoned in stages between here and Buffalo following the EL merger in 1960; as it was, the line had only a year left as a through route after the consolidation of facilities in 1959, where the DLW abandoned much of its line from here to Binghamton in favor of running on the Erie. The connection was just east of the overpass Im standing on. The line in the distance is the connection from Conrails Corning Secondary, once the NYC line to Jersey Shore PA, itself relocated out of the street as part of the Erie relocation project in 1951-the lines had joined just east of downtown. It will join the Southern Tier at CP W Glass about 1/2 mile to the west, approximately where the Erie station stood. |

The power at Binghamton could be surprising, even in the post mega merger era. The BNSF unit came in on H 88, and was a regular visitor for several weeks. The ex P&W unit was leased to the NYSW before being sold. There might even be some NS power around. An NYSW unit is also in the act, hiding down by their shop. |

Interesting stuff |
Description: |
An overview of QD yard shows a few interesting items. In the foreground is a set of power that came off a Goudy coal train. A trio of UP units, no stranger to coal service out west, are not that common here. Behind them is an NS SD40-2, one of the early ones that had been an NW unit originally. In the background, thats not a P&W unit. NYSW acquired some ex P&W units as part of their lease fleet. Most of them wound up working on the NYSW for a time, including this one, presently dozing away the afternoon. The NYSW proper also is showing the flag, as a yellowjacket from BH 2 comes around the corner from Bevier St, seen under the bridge in the distance. |

Transfer power |
Description: |
Conrail ran a transfer job from Selkirk to interchange with D&H. Selkirk was the GE capital of the world on Conrail, and any GE was a possibility. Common power in those days was various U boats inherited from its predecessors, such as this U30B. The U30 would not last much longer-it would be gone in a year or two-but the U23B it was coupled to would last into the 1990's. |

Selkirk shop |
Description: |
In August 1985, Tri State NRHS ran a trip to Selkirk, north via the Hudson Line with a return to Jersey on the West Shore. There was a shop tour at Selkirk, during which I was able to get some photos of the power. Heres a set of U23Bs, still pretty common at the time. |

L&N power |
Description: |
An ex L&N U boat drifts past the rail train it just dropped at Sanford. I was alway glad to see L&N power, as it was one of those roads I could never get. |

U boat and a work train |
Description: |
There were still a good number of U23Bs around the system at this time, mostly running secondary assignments, such as this work train, though occasionally theyd get some big time action. |

A pair of U23Bs roll a rail train west at MP 250. The U boats were still about two years from retirement, and could be found on any train. |

Head end helpers |
Description: |
Sometimes, due to train make up, the helpers were put up front. Typically this happened with Trailvans, but some other trains got them as well. Here we see a TV train on its way uphill. |

On the Corridor |
Description: |
At CR startup, Amtrak got the Corridor, and CR was a tenant. Ultimately, this moved freight off the corridor to a large degree, as Amtrak raised the wheelage rates to a point that was not economical. There was still a fair amount of local traffic, which was served from a variety of yards. This is one of the locals, with a U23B and U30B working south of Newark Penn Station. McCarter Highway is the bridge at left. Note the EL box at right. |
