Description:  Much of the power UP inherited from merged roads ran around in patched predecessor paint for years, and a lot of secondary power didnt get fully repainted. This ex SP tunnel motor got the full treatment, and was sent barnstorming. We see it on a military train headed west at Utica.

Sadness or euphoria
Title:  Sadness or euphoria
Description:  NYSW had some interesting power through the years, though sometimes it was not all that attractive. When it was painted in yellowjacket, it looked sharp. There were also periods where it looked pretty sad, patch painted and mismatched. Today its sadness and not euphoria, as an ex SP tunnel motor in a multicolor patch paint job leads a pair of ex Cartier big Alcos, still mostly in their old scheme. Theres also a glimpse of F 45 3636, in yellowjacket, and definitely in a state of euphoria, as its running. This is SU 99 arriving from Jersey. The tunnel motor would soon get the yellow and black the NYSW is famous for; the Alcos would get sold to WNY&P before they ever got close to a paint booth, and 3636 would eventually become a hangar queen and go to scrap.

Description:  An SU 99 pulls up to QD with a mixed bag of power, mostly in ragged paint. The trailing unit is in yellowjacket, and the leader eventually got that scheme. The two Alcos were gone before they got painted, which is a shame, though second unit 3672 did get "NYSW" on the rear above the radiator. Seeing the yellow jacket scheme on big Alcos would have been a treat.

Description:  For a while in the 1990s, NYSW could put together a pretty good looking set of power. After Walter Rich passed, and most of the SD 45s were sold or scrapped, they picked up used diesels from a number of sources. The result was, it became harder and harder to find a matched set of power. This SU 100 is a case in point, rolling a 63 car train east past the Kirkwood water plant, though it does have one of the two SD 40T-2's that they had painted at the time.

Description:  We chased an eastbound detour train, probably Q 156, or possibly Q 404, I didnt note the symbol, to Susquehanna, then caught this Q 271 there going back. We were able to grab this shot along PA 171 where the tracks go away from the road at Red Rock. Thats my then girlfriend, now wife, Diane, getting a shot of the action too.

Most of the time, they put the yellowjackets in the lead, but anything could show up. Description:  BH 3 rolls 35 cars across the Chenango River, in a companion piece to the similar photo in this album, only now we see more of the frozen river it is crossing. There was a time when an effort was made to have a yellowjacket leading, to put forth a good image. Not today, as the patch painted ex SP unit is leading. It will eventually become an SD30ECO, but for now, its still a tired ex SP tunnel motor.

Description:  A leased SD 38, one of two on the railroad-the other is the last unit in this consist-a couple of patch painted SP units, and a black ex NS SD lead a 76 car train north past the ex DLW station, partly visible behind the train, at Whitney Point. This is most likely an SU 403, a train run as a detour move for CSX. This was common at the time, as CSX was doing a lot of work on their ex NYC lines from Jersey to Buffalo, so getting a low priority train off their main eased the congestion.

Description:  Train speeds on the Northern Division were modest, 30 MPH in most places, so chasing was not a challenge most of the time. After shooting a train at Forks, you could easily beat him to this spot, where the tracks crossed US 11 south of Whitmey Point. Here you were afforded an open view of the train as it approached the crossing. It will be a good wait for the 110 cars to clear. I wont beat him to Lisle, only three miles up, but Killawog shouldnt be a problem.
