Canned |
Description: |
NYSW would sometimes run a train up to Chenango Forks and stash it in the siding, perhaps because there was no room to hold a long train at Binghamton without making the local jobs lives difficult. As a result, you never knew what youd find there. Today, its an ex Cartier Alco with what appears to be an ex B&M GP 40-2, now a HATX lease unit, an ex NW SD 40, and a tunnel motor. |

Sadness or euphoria |
Description: |
NYSW had some interesting power through the years, though sometimes it was not all that attractive. When it was painted in yellowjacket, it looked sharp. There were also periods where it looked pretty sad, patch painted and mismatched. Today its sadness and not euphoria, as an ex SP tunnel motor in a multicolor patch paint job leads a pair of ex Cartier big Alcos, still mostly in their old scheme. Theres also a glimpse of F 45 3636, in yellowjacket, and definitely in a state of euphoria, as its running. This is SU 99 arriving from Jersey. The tunnel motor would soon get the yellow and black the NYSW is famous for; the Alcos would get sold to WNY&P before they ever got close to a paint booth, and 3636 would eventually become a hangar queen and go to scrap. |

Motley power |

An SU 99 pulls up to QD with a mixed bag of power, mostly in ragged paint. The trailing unit is in yellowjacket, and the leader eventually got that scheme. The two Alcos were gone before they got painted, which is a shame, though second unit 3672 did get "NYSW" on the rear above the radiator. Seeing the yellow jacket scheme on big Alcos would have been a treat. |

This eastbound had an SD 40 leading, but three 6 axle MLWs in the consist for its 106 cars. Eastern Canada was Alco paradise in this time, long after the US class 1s had shed them from their rosters. Meet with Alcos on both trains |
Description: |
CP still had a good sized fleet of MLWs in that period, and they often ran on the D&H. Here 553 holds the main as 556 rolls its 52 cars past with a GP9 rebuild leading a pair of C424s, passing the M636 trailing on 553. |

Power change |
Description: |
This 553 train left Binghamton with CP 5646 leading. it must have crapped out somewhere on Belden Hill and this GP9 leader was brought up from Binghamton, or swapped off 556. Still, it looks good in clean paint, even if the delay has now put the train almost in darkness, now rolling on past GR with its 82 cars. |

KL 1 with a big M |
Description: |
This was one of the first, if not the first, trains to run on the Tier with an Alco. Conrail was not pleased, but they managed to deal with it. The train is getting out of town with 25 platforms and 7 COFC, passing CP Johnson on the west side. |

Alco west |
Description: |
Both major Canadian roads were using Alco design diesels long after they were gone in the US. Seeing them in the lead was common, such as this 85 car westbound at Dorval. |
