Since the Ithaca Branch was Form D territory, there were block stations to designate track blocks. We see a 103 car UNE train for Milliken passing two of them. There is also one at the other end of the secondary where it meets the Southern Tier, designated Wave, in Waverly. |

Making him wait |
Description: |
Conrail was not shy about making the D&H wait on the Tier, but occasionally practicality and common sense won out. Today is one of those days, as BUME rolls 49 cars through West BD on track 2, headed for East Binghamton, while an XCL empty coal train cools its heels on the former DLW, having come out track 3 from downtown with 35 hoppers for Clearfield PA. That's the Vestal Spur in the lower right corner, the remaining portion of what was the DLW's 70 MPH main line. It now runs a few miles out to Vestal to serve the few remaining local customers. |

Underway |
Description: |
The XCL train starts west, having gotten the board now that CP has cleared. It will be a gloomy trip to Gang Mills, as the typical Southern Tier gloom is hanging low. That lumpy track at right is the Vestal Spur. When NS got the line in the 1999 split, it started running C40-9's on that line-like it did everywhere else. By 2002, it bit the bullet and spent a bunch of money on ties and resurfacing, which it sorely needed after years of Conrail running heavy coal trains on it to the NYSEG power plant several times a week, but doing virtually no maintenance. The light building at far right is the NY State office building, affectionately known as the "SOB". It had a fire in the basement in 1981, and was unoccupied for 15 years while the PCB's released from electrical equipment were cleaned up. It was the poster child for government efficiency in NY. |

Coal at the semaphores |
Description: |
An eastbound loaded UNE coal train for the Goudy plant in Johnson City rolls through the twin semaphores at Tioga Center behind a single C40-8. Its an easy pull for the GE with only 42 cars. Note the light is lit green on the westbound signal. The meet will happen somewhere between here and MP 240, probably just east of town where the tracks are inaccessible. |

Rounding the curve |
Description: |
This spot was a good place for photo, though most fans paid more attention to the semaphores a mile to the east. Ayres Rd, which crossed the tracks at the signals, came back around and went over them on a bridge. By this time, the bridge was closed and the deck removed, but the end of it was still a good spot. We see OIBU rolling west approaching it, at the same spot where Bob Wilt caught the LV Sayre Turn, which ran on the now abandoned LV Auburn Branch, being overtaken by an EL westbound, seen on page 79 of EL in Color, Vol 2. |

Once busy, now a memory |
Description: |
An XBP coal train passes Cuba Jct, once a much busier place than it is at the date of this photo. The train is on the Meadville Line, going from single track to double for the 11 miles into Olean. There were eastbound and westbound sidings here in Erie days. The empty roadbed to the left was the Erie/EL River Line, which followed the Genesee River to NT tower, near Hunt, where it joined the Buffalo Sub. It crossed the river near Belfast on one of Eries massive steel bridges. A busy route when it was EL-it was the preferred route for most frieghts, since it had a much better gradient than the main line through Wellsville-it was abandoned almost immediately after Conrail startup. They dynamited the bridge in the early 80s. Of note, and not visible in this photo, the PRR also had a branch to Rochester that left the Buffalo Line at Olean, and passed under the River Line just east of here, taking a river level route up through Letchworth Park. |

Used to be X tower |
Description: |
The tower actually stood across the EL, in the northwest quadrant of the crossing, a half mile west of the Olean station. CR tore it down early in its existence when they were working furiously to downgrade the former EL lines. It really wasnt needed after the CR startup anyway, since traffic here declined from several dozen trains/day to a handful on both lines. It almost could have been made an automatic interlocking. So a once elegant towers work is now done by a guy a couple hundred miles away, and a metal box. Ah, progress!! |

One of my favorite locations-easy to get to from my house, and great for westbounds in the afternoon-was the area around Miller Beach Rd just east of Owego. Here we see OIBU behind a C40-8. |
