Eastbound coal
Title:  Eastbound coal
Description:  An eastbound coal train for NYSEGs Goudy station in Johnson City splits the semaphores at Tioga Center behind a single unit. Note the bottom light on the westbound signal is lit. A westbound is in the block, so well get two here. The crossing gate and relay case sit on the former LV Auburn Branch right of way.

Block limit stations
Title:  Block limit stations
Description:  Since the Ithaca Branch was Form D territory, there were block stations to designate track blocks. We see a 103 car UNE train for Milliken passing two of them. Rena, on the left, governs the Ithaca Branch; Croft, on the right, is on the Lehigh Secondary. There is also one at the other end of the secondary where it meets the Southern Tier, designated Wave, in Waverly.

Making him wait
Title:  Making him wait
Description:  Conrail was not shy about making the D&H wait on the Tier, but occasionally practicality and common sense won out. Today is one of those days, as BUME rolls 49 cars through West BD on track 2, headed for East Binghamton, while an XCL empty coal train cools its heels on the former DLW, having come out track 3 from downtown with 35 hoppers for Clearfield PA. That's the Vestal Spur in the lower right corner, the remaining portion of what was the DLW's 70 MPH main line. It now runs a few miles out to Vestal to serve the few remaining local customers.

Underway
Title:  Underway
Description:  The XCL train starts west, having gotten the board now that CP has cleared. It will be a gloomy trip to Gang Mills, as the typical Southern Tier gloom is hanging low. That lumpy track at right is the Vestal Spur. When NS got the line in the 1999 split, it started running C40-9's on that line-like it did everywhere else. By 2002, it bit the bullet and spent a bunch of money on ties and resurfacing, which it sorely needed after years of Conrail running heavy coal trains on it to the NYSEG power plant several times a week, but doing virtually no maintenance. The light building at far right is the NY State office building, affectionately known as the "SOB". It had a fire in the basement in 1981, and was unoccupied for 15 years while the PCB's released from electrical equipment were cleaned up. It was the poster child for government efficiency in NY.

Coal at the semaphores
Title:  Coal at the semaphores
Description:  An eastbound loaded UNE coal train for the Goudy plant in Johnson City rolls through the twin semaphores at Tioga Center behind a single C40-8. Its an easy pull for the GE with only 42 cars. Note the light is lit green on the westbound signal. The meet will happen somewhere between here and MP 240, probably just east of town where the tracks are inaccessible.

Short coal
Title:  Short coal
Description:  This XCL train returning Goudy empties to Clearfiled PA was a bit overpowered. Only 18 cars are along for the trip behind a trio of six axle units.
