ELOI surprise
Title:  ELOI surprise
Description:  ELOI has made a pick up at M-K Hornell, which was rebuilding a fleet of R 32 and R 46 subway cars for NYCTA at the time. Usually BUOI got this task, but it must have been running late, or heavy, and ELOI, which was usually a light train, made the pick up. Too bad we didnt know it was out there-it would have been three trains on the EL Main Line west of Hornell that day, an unheard of occurrence for us.

Title:  West in the sun
Description:  OIBU rolls 93 cars west near MP 250, having just passed the Tioga County transfer station, and a couple of semaphores, one of which can be seen to the right of the train. This was the spot where the LV Auburn Branch ducked under the EL to reach Sayre.

Title:  Backing down
Description:  OIBU has made its set off at QD yard, and is now backing onto his train under the conductors watchful eye. He'll take 50 cars out of town today. Off to the far right, the power for WABH 11 is hiding over on the DLW side.

Pulling
Title:  Pulling
Description:  OIBU has gotten back on his train and is now starting to pull its 50 cars west. We have here a good view of the station area. The concrete pad behind the lead unit is the location of the Erie station. Under the middle of the overpass is the Erie freight house, the red brick building. It will be torn down in 1999. In the right background, we see the station tower on the DLW station, as well as the steel frame of the Marconi tower, which was used to mount an antenna for an early radio application. To the left of the radio tower, we see the smokestack for the station powerhouse, which not only provided heat for the station, but also for the steam lines that heated the set out cars that were dropped or picked up here.

Starting over the bridge
Title:  Starting over the bridge
Description:  The steelwork for the Chenango River bridge actually starts before the tracks are at the river bank, as the structure also vaults over Water St before reaching the water. OIBU is on this part of the bridge as we look up, about to cross the Chenango, and head out the west side.

Stacks and a TBS
Title:  Stacks and a TBS
Description:  No, not Turner Broadcasting. It was Conrail terminology for Temporary Block Station. Due to trackwork, trains were running wrong side from Waverly to Elmira, and there was a conductor stationed there, working out of his van, to hand up orders and throw switches. TV 303 is getting the orders today.

Engine engine number 9
Title:  Engine engine number 9
Description:  CSX is unusual among class 1 roads, in that it starts its locomotive numbering with 1. This is the lowest numbered unit I have seen, #9, leading 109 cars of K 277 at South Plainfield as it heads for, among other places, a landfill in the south, as much of the consist is trash containers.

Warbonnet on the river
Title:  Warbonnet on the river
Description:  13T arrives at Binghamton behind the unlikely combination of a BNSF warbonnet GE, and a CSX standard cab GE, with 34 cars in tow for Allentown. Binghamton was one of those places where anything could show up, and usually did. The NS era is proving to be no different in that regard than any previous era.

Title:  13T with western power.
Description:  As I have noted elsewhere in this album, 13T could sometimes show up with some surprises. Here its going through Endicott behind a pair of GEs. Not a big deal, except on is a BNSF unit still in red and silver, the other is a standard cab CSX unit. The train will meet H 88 at Binghamton in about 20 minutes. H 88 has a pair of BNSF AC4400s. By the mill
Title:  By the mill
Description:  A BH 1 with a CSX standard cab C 40-8 leader gets underway for Syracuse, passing the Agway mill at the south end of Bevier St. The train has 94 cars, a lot larger than most trains on the NYSW at this time. This is more likely a detour move of CSX Q403. It had come up from Jersey over the Southern Tier Line, making the connection to the NYSW via the new switch at East BD, along Court St, then crossing the ex Erie NS line at BD to get here. It will go north on the Syracuse Branch.

Detour
Title:  Detour
Description:  CSX would sometimes hand off overflow traffic to the NYSW. These trains, SU 403 and 404 on the Suskie, were obviously not high priority, as it would sometimes take 24 hours to get them from Jersey back onto CSX at Syracuse. Here we see one of them behind a Bright Future standard cab C40 and the surviving F45, 3636, just after taking the switch to the Syracuse branch at Chenago Forks.
