Stone |
Description: |
Usually the province of third tier power-and this train is not immune from that, as you can see by the SD50-sometimes they get better than their station would merit, such as this UP road unit that must have been hijacked off something more important. Approaching Davidson Rd under a cloud. |

SLN 5 behind NYSW and NS power |
Description: |
NYSW and NS power leads SLN 5, symboled DHT 9 on Conrail, past the rocks just east of CP East Glass. This is the approximate location where the DLW and Erie joined going east, with the DLW trains taking the Erie from here to Binghamton after 1959. The DLW was abandoned from here to the west side of Binghamton, except for short segments in Elmira, and from Waverly to Nichols to serve an Agway there. That section was abandoned in 1965. If you know where to look when you're on NY 17 east, you can see vestiges of the right of way near Elmira and Wilawanna; there were still some bridges near Lounsberry, and the Apalachin station still stands. It's a Subway and ice cream shop. |

OIBU |
Description: |
This area has seen a lot of changes. You wouldnt know it from this photo, but there was a double track main line to the left of the train up til 1959, that of the Lackawanna. Gone without a trace, 33 years later. The bridge in the foreground would be replaced with a culvert in a couple of years when Conrail single tracked the line here. Today's view is of OIBU, a short 24 cars of it, seen from the NY 352 overpass. |

Along the rocks |
Description: |
The set up here at Gibson is rock wall, Southern Tier Line, now on the Lackawanna alignment, NY 17 on the Erie alignment, with the Chemung River, out of the picture, to the far right. When New York state built the 4 lane here, there were a lot of changes made to the landscape. As it was, this was the location where the Erie and DLW met and ran side by side to Horseheads, and to some extent, all the way to Binghamton. After 1959, the DLW was abandoned between here and the west side of Binghamton, taking the Erie between the two places. |

View from the bridge |
Description: |
ML 401 is about to roll under the NY 17C overpass east of Owego. There was no sidewalk on the bridge, so this not the easiest place to shoot from. |

Coming around |
Description: |
Theres a sharp curve at MP 230, just as the train enters Campville, and it makes for a dramatic entrance to a nothing town. BUOI rolls 60 cars through at 40 MPH as it makes its way east to its next call at Binghamton. |

On my way home |
Description: |
One of the pluses of living and working within earshot of the Tier was that I often would catch a train going somewhere when I got out of work. Today it was BUOI, about to pass under NY 17C. I had chased from my workplace in Owego, shot him in Campville and here, and now had a five minute trip home. Note the semaphore behind the covered hopper, 7th head car. |

BUAL |
Description: |
Conrail changed the symbol on its train running the Lehigh Line several times over the years. For a while in the early 90s it was BUAL, originating at Frontier Yard in Buffalo, running the Tier to Waverly, down the connection to Sayre, then east on the ex LV to Allentown. Here it is rolling 69 cars into Gang Mills, seen from the overpass at the west end of the yard. Thats NY 417/US 15 in the distance, an expressway that connected with NY 17 at Gang Mills, and ended just south of the exit for Addison. Now it is part of I 99, running on the alignment of US 15 all the way to Williamsport. |

Four units east |
Description: |
And a short train. BUOI rolls across the Kinney Rd crossing in Campville behind four EMDs with all of 37 cars. In a masterful show of efficiency, this same power set would return the next day on OIBU. |

Rolling past the station |
Description: |
Sometimes trains bypassing Dewitt yard would roll past on the station track, such as this 136 car westbound. The odd road number is due to Conrail starting up a fleet of lease units, which were renumbered to distinguish them from their system power. They took a page out of New Havens playbook, giving them a leading zero on the road numbers. |
