Poking out of the shadow
Title:  Poking out of the shadow
Description:  OIBU rolls along the Susquehanna at Red Rocks, just east of Great Bend as the last sun reaches into the valley. Today's train is unusual, as the consist is 14 freight, 12 COFC and 125 stack platforms, more like an NYSW train than OIBU.

Tying up town
Title:  Tying up town
Description:  The primary reason for the existence of Conrails Ithaca Branch was the NYSEG plant at Milliken, and Cargill Salt, both of which were north of town along Cayuga Lake. When they went to either of these customers, they had some streetside running to get through town. The coal trains would run about 90 cars, and often there would be a pick up at Cargill that added another 30 cars or so. It really tied things up when a train came. An overpass has been built since this photo, really improving the access when a train is in town.

Streetside
Title:  Streetside
Description:  The Ithaca Branch runs along a city street to get through town from the yard to the line up to Ludlowville, where the Cargill salt mine and NYSEG plant are located. It makes for some interesting traffic. Not too bad here, though this guy wanted to get across pretty badly-a close call, even at 10 MPH-but the main streets get really tied up. WAIT 2 rolls south in the late afternoon, and a traffic mess is a sure thing.

Stacks in the fog
Title:  Stacks in the fog
Description:  An early October morning finds TV 301 heading west at Hiawatha Rd in Owego, passing signal 233-1, which would be removed when the new radio alarm detector was installed at Tioga Center a few years later. If you look closely, you can see the extra light below the main head. This light diplays "hot box" if the detector at Campville, MP 230, gets a hit on a hot axle, and would set the signal red. I only saw it happen once.

Once busy, now a memory
Title:  Once busy, now a memory
Description:  An XBP coal train passes Cuba Jct, once a much busier place than it is at the date of this photo. The train is on the Meadville Line, going from single track to double for the 11 miles into Olean. There were eastbound and westbound sidings here in Erie days. The empty roadbed to the left was the Erie/EL River Line, which followed the Genesee River to NT tower, near Hunt, where it joined the Buffalo Sub. It crossed the river near Belfast on one of Eries massive steel bridges. A busy route when it was EL-it was the preferred route for most frieghts, since it had a much better gradient than the main line through Wellsville-it was abandoned almost immediately after Conrail startup. They dynamited the bridge in the early 80s. Of note, and not visible in this photo, the PRR also had a branch to Rochester that left the Buffalo Line at Olean, and passed under the River Line just east of here, taking a river level route up through Letchworth Park.

Used to be X tower
Title:  Used to be X tower
Description:  The tower actually stood across the EL, in the northwest quadrant of the crossing, a half mile west of the Olean station. CR tore it down early in its existence when they were working furiously to downgrade the former EL lines. It really wasnt needed after the CR startup anyway, since traffic here declined from several dozen trains/day to a handful on both lines. It almost could have been made an automatic interlocking. So a once elegant towers work is now done by a guy a couple hundred miles away, and a metal box. Ah, progress!!
