Old power, new life
Title:  Old power, new life
Description:  Once a princess, now a hard working old girl, this former Santa Fe Warbonnet SD 75I is now part of the PRLX lease fleet. A number of these units have turned up on KCS lately, mostly in bulk commodity service. I remember when these were the queens of the high iron, rolling big fast trains across the Transcon. Hard to believe that was over 20 years ago. Theyre still on the main, just not making the 70 MPH they used to, a testament to the longevity of EMDs engineering. This was on a northbound at CP Flint Creek, just picked up from its duty as a DPU on an AEPX coal train, now in the plant.

Caught up again
Title:  Caught up again
Description:  After taking care of things in Stilwell, I headed back for Siloam, catching the H train working at Watts. Here the power is backing into the yard for a three car pick up. The light was going, and it was getting to be dinnertime, so one shot, and off I go.

Waiting on the grain
Title:  Waiting on the grain
Description:  When I got to Stilwell, this northbound H train was waiting in the siding. For the second day in a row, I caught one of the AC44CW's in Belle paint, three of them in two days. They must be catching up at the paint shop. Also in consist is an ex ATSF SD 75M, now a lease unit. I had to do a few things in town, so I shot him here, got the grain train at the station, then went to take care of my chores. Id pick up the chase shortly, though.

Fading away
Title:  Fading away
Description:  Old diesels are like old soldiers-they never die, just fade into lease fleets. Hard to believe the trailing unit, an ex Santa Fe SD 75 is over 20 years old, and now working for a leasing company.

Stretched out
Title:  Stretched out
Description:  The northbound H train has pulled up past the yard office, its train stretched out down toward Bakery Feeds. Its only a 54 car train-with 7 units, though I think some of them are power balancing-but looks a lot longer as it glints in the late afternoon sun.

New leader
Title:  New leader
Description:  When we got back to Gentry, we figured this train was waiting on a meet, which appeared to be imminent when we heard a horn off to the north. Not quite. This pair of units came down and coupled to the head end. I wasnt there to see what had gone on before we got there, but if I had to guess, they had a problem with the lead unit, and took the DPU and moved it to the head end. The plan was to chase this guy north, but KCS had other plans. Things don't often work out as you thought.

Caught him
Title:  Caught him
Description:  The train, not the cow. My daughter was in from Tampa for Thanksgiving, returning this Monday morning. We passed through Gentry on the way to the airport, seeing the back of this empty oil train as we turned onto Ark 12 to go to XNA. I figured, this guy will be gone when we get back after dropping her off. To my surprise, the train was still there, waiting at the Ark 59B crossing, in the company of one of the local residents. There would be more action unfolding shortly.

Thatll do
Title:  Thatll do
Description:  The power that was the DPU is about to couple to the former lead unit. CSX 419 is the new leader, and will lead north. I didn't get a car count, but these trains usually run 112 cars-110 tanks and two buffers.

Down by the station
Title:  Down by the station
Description:  There are still a few stations on the Heavener Sub, a couple of them museums, a couple now city hall in their communities. The station here is a museum, and on the opposite end, has a Belle painted F 7, 73D. Its not visible in this shot of a northbound empty grain train pulling past the station and signal 216-9 behind a gray SD 70MAC.

Beach day
Title:  Beach day
Description:  The empty grain train rolls over the Elk River at Ginger Blue, a group of kids enjoying the high 70 degree day watching the 100 cars roll overhead. This was a one way chase, as there was nothing to meet at McElhany, near Neosho. So it goes.

Big rocks
Title:  Big rocks
Description:  The line in this part of Missouri follows Butler Creek up to Noel, where it reaches the Elk River. Over the millions of years it has taken for the valleys to form, many rocks have fallen from the cliffsides, among them some very large ones. The empty grain train passes on of them just south of Noel.
