TV 7 four motors |
Description: |
Conrail had a lot of 4 axle power, which made sense here on the Water Level Route, which, as the name implies, had virtually no grades. Even as it went on a 6 axle spree, acquiring several hundred C40-8s and SD60s of a couple of variations, it ran a lot of its van trains with 4 motors, as we see on TV 7 with 68 cars here at Wanakah, west of Buffalo. |

TV 200 sits back from CP Coles as it waits for a westbound train to come off the single track to the east. The smokestack in the background is the power plant for the state hospital, once an Erie and EL customer. The track used to unload the coal that fired it is still in place next to Court St, but now heavily overgrown. |

Buy US Savings Bonds |
Description: |
Conrail had a couple of units painted to encourage purchase of US Savings Bonds. One of them leads ML 440 as seen from the overpass at Hunt, just east of the Portage Bridge. The signal alongside the train was a semaphore til a couple of years earlier; up til then there were a pair of them here. When track 2 was lifted, the signal was replaced with a Type G cluster signal. The roadbed of former track 2 has been graded and ballasted to make a maintenance road. |

Description: |
A westbound merchandise train, probably SETO judging by the auto parts cars head out, passes Syracuse with a B40 and a B36. The Albany Division was GE Central in those days, as Selkirk was a major GE shop, with several hundred units assigned there, including all the C30-7A's. Seeing 4 axle units was common on both road and yard assignments. Amtrak is peeking around the corner, coming in for its stop. |

Description: |
As stack trains became more common, Conrail added schedules to their line up to cover the non dedicated trains. One of them is TV 263, seen here rolling past Dewitt behind four GE's, all four axle, with 106 stack platforms and three COFC. |

All GEs |
Description: |
This was a pretty common power set on Conrail in those days. They had gone big for GEs, and had many 4 axle units, which did exactly what the did on the NYC-handle fast intermodal trains. The descendants of the U25B have 106 platforms and 3 COFC in hand as they head west. |

Rolling past Cass St |
Description: |
BUOI rolls into Hornell past Cass St tower, now a relay case for CP Cass, as it enters Hornell. The tower is partly seen at far right. To the far left, coming out from under the first car, the track leading to the left is the Erie main to Jamestown and Youngstown OH. It was cut the year before, when Conrail essentially abandoned it as a through route, with what little traffic remained served by Olean based locals, with cars forwarded over the ex PRR Buffalo Line. It would be another ten years til WNY&P resored the connectino after NS took over the line. For now, we have only the ghosts of ELOI and 2NY 100 to take the switch and climb toward Tip Top. |

Everyone is here |
Description: |
Even a couple of Conrail units. Selkirk is looking like North Platte when it comes to run through power. Here we have a full view of the Santa Fe cowl unit, as well as power from NS, UP and CSX, as well as a partly hidden GP 30 rebuild from BN. Oh, there are some Conrail units here too. |

D&H connection |
Description: |
After the departure of CSX from the Buffalo market via the ex B&O, the Sea Land trains went via a CR route to Chicago. This was a big time saver over the B&O via Pittsburgh. This 46 platform eastbound will go onto the D&H at Buffalo and become their 254, going to NYSW at Binghamton. |

Northbound racks and more eastern power |
Description: |
A northbound rack train rolls past with a Conrail unit in consist. The leader is on familiar turf-it was one of MP's C36-7's. Saw NS power that day too. |
