Description:  ELBUs counterpart, BUEL, left Buffalo this morning and is now 75 miles into the trip as it passes under a local bridge near the NY-PA line. The effort required to move the 138 cars is evident, as only the 6000 HP of three GP 38's is enough to get the train over the road.

At one time, when the PRR owned that line, it was a busy piece of railroad, and the stomping ground of GG 1s. Now its SD40-2s, such as this one with a 102 car PPLX coal train.

Chemical Coast power
Title:  Chemical Coast power
Description:  One of the more important locations on the Conrail system was the ex CNJ between Oak Island and Perth Amboy NJ, where many of the oil companies had refineries and chemical plants. Its the place that many think of when New Jersey is mentioned. Conrail generated a lot of revenue here, to the point of having two dedicated trains originate here daily at the time of this photo, CCAL to Allentown, and CCPI to Conway. Heres some of the local power that gathered all that traffic, as seen from the Jersey Turnpike.

MP 337
Title:  MP 337
Description:  The milepost to the right of BUOI gives away the location as the train approaches Hornell and a pick up at Morrison Knudsen. To the left of the train, next to the pole line, you can see a semaphore in the approach position. There were a pair of semaphores there, across from each other. It was not an easy location to access, hence there are few photos of that set, unlike the Tioga Center blades, which you could shoot from the shoulder of NY 17C. The train is on track 1, the "fast" track, with a 40 MPH speed limit. Track 2, the "D&H main", so called becaise some Conrail dispatchers would put D&H trackage rights trains on it, had a section of 25 MPH and a section of 10 MPH speed restrictions, making for a very slow trip to River Jct.

Working the yard
Title:  Working the yard
Description:  Conrail had a small yard at Lyons which served some local industry, and also as a set off point for trains ENSE and SEEN, which still ran to Enola via the Corning Secondary down through the Grand Canyon of PA and into the PRR Buffalo Line at Jersey Shore. This GP 38 was working there while we waited for other things to happen.

Reading bridge
Title:  Reading bridge
Description:  Rockville was the best known, but not the only bridge over the Susquehanna at Harrisburg. The line to Hagerstown MD was part Reading Lurgan Branch, and part PRR Hagerstown Branch. This 146 car ENRO, a run through to NS and Roanoke, originated at Enola, did the grand tour of the capital, then went south on this ex Reading line, crossing the ex PRR Rockville Bridge, then back on this ex Reading bridge, reaching it via a connection at CP Capital, where the ex PRR connected with the Reading from Rutherford yard, then out of service.

Working the yard
Title:  Working the yard
Description:  WABH 11 works at Liberty St, shoving a cut into the yards east end. This was a five day job, though I dont know how they found enough work to do. There were not many customers left here. National Pipe and NYSEG on the Vestal Spur; Agway, Frito Lay, and several in Kirkwood at the industrial park. Occasionally theyd go to Endicott if they had a car for Akel Wholesale Grocery in Johnson City, which was not that often. How about that ICG box behind the power.

Description:  WABH 11, the local that works the Binghamton area, is on the ex Lackawanna side today, and will head down the old DLW on the Vestal Spur to National Pipe and Plastic, the small remnant of the line west of Binghamton. The area Im standing in once serviced mail and express cars. The GP 38-2 was typical power for this job, though sometimes it got a B 23-7. By the early 90s, GP 40-2s were common. Title:  Out in the high grass
Description:  Like many rail facilities that became underused, the ex DLW YO yard became overgrown. The were only a couple of tracks left which served the Agway feed mill, seen at right. WABH 11 had the task of servicing the customer, which we see here. The boxcars were filled with grain, also a relic of the past. It woule continue a few more years, and sometimes some real classics would show up. On at least one occasion I saw Erie cars here.
