Chemical Coast power |
Description: |
One of the more important locations on the Conrail system was the ex CNJ between Oak Island and Perth Amboy NJ, where many of the oil companies had refineries and chemical plants. Its the place that many think of when New Jersey is mentioned. Conrail generated a lot of revenue here, to the point of having two dedicated trains originate here daily at the time of this photo, CCAL to Allentown, and CCPI to Conway. Heres some of the local power that gathered all that traffic, as seen from the Jersey Turnpike. |

MP 337 |
Description: |
The milepost to the right of BUOI gives away the location as the train approaches Hornell and a pick up at Morrison Knudsen. To the left of the train, next to the pole line, you can see a semaphore in the approach position. There were a pair of semaphores there, across from each other. It was not an easy location to access, hence there are few photos of that set, unlike the Tioga Center blades, which you could shoot from the shoulder of NY 17C. The train is on track 1, the "fast" track, with a 40 MPH speed limit. Track 2, the "D&H main", so called becaise some Conrail dispatchers would put D&H trackage rights trains on it, had a section of 25 MPH and a section of 10 MPH speed restrictions, making for a very slow trip to River Jct. |

WABH 11 works at Liberty St, shoving a cut into the yards east end. This was a five day job, though I dont know how they found enough work to do. There were not many customers left here. National Pipe and NYSEG on the Vestal Spur; Agway, Frito Lay, and several in Kirkwood at the industrial park. Occasionally theyd go to Endicott if they had a car for Akel Wholesale Grocery in Johnson City, which was not that often. How about that ICG box behind the power. |

Out of the sun on the CNJ |
Description: |
The ENSE that was in Allentown yar earlier is now making its way toward Easton on the ex CNJ-look at the signal in the distance. The yard was a CNJ facility-the LV ran across the river-so any trains coming or going from the east would have to use a short portion of the CNJ to get on the Lehigh Line at Bethlehem. |

Local power |
Description: |
Locals on the Tier for quite a few years got GP38s, though at times B23s could also be found. This local at Campbell Hall on the ex Erie Graham Line is truc to form, assigned 8125, seen at the old Campbell Hall station, the strip of blacktop that existed prior to the fancy station they have now. Note the old Erie camp car to the left of the diesel. |

DLW side |
Description: |
WABH 11, the local that works the Binghamton area, is on the ex Lackawanna side today, and will head down the old DLW on the Vestal Spur to National Pipe and Plastic, the small remnant of the line west of Binghamton. The area Im standing in once serviced mail and express cars. The GP 38-2 was typical power for this job, though sometimes it got a B 23-7. By the early 90s, GP 40-2s were common. NS is presently(2015) using a pair of ex CR SD 40-2s. |

Out in the high grass |
Description: |
Like many rail facilities that became underused, the ex DLW YO yard became overgrown. The were only a couple of tracks left which served the Agway feed mill, seen at right. WABH 11 had the task of servicing the customer, which we see here. The boxcars were filled with grain, also a relic of the past. It would continue a few more years, and sometimes some real classics would show up. On at least one occasion I saw Erie cars here. |

Local on the River Line |

Despite Selkirk having more GEs than Erie, the locals on the River Line and in Jersey were often handled by EMDs, mostly a large fleet of GP 38s of various descriptions. Heres one southbound at Haverstraw |
