Title:  Visitor from afar
Description:  Every once in a while, an eastern unit will find its way to the Heavener Sub. NS units seem to mostly be in trailing positions, but for some reason, CSX power leads. This one is leading a southbound grain train at Davidson Rd with a "we aint mad at nobody" consist.

Lucky catch
Title:  Lucky catch
Description:  We were headed to lunch at the Wooden Spoon in Gentry, and saw this train stretched through the south siding switch there. A quick run up to the head end yielded this shot of an empty grain move with seven units and 100 covered hoppers. More and more, northbound grain and coal trains are being used to ferry excess power back north, resulting in these monster power consists, where in the past, after enough diesels were accumulated at Heavener and Shreveport, a lite power move would run. This undoubtedly makes for fewer crew starts, but doesn't make for good photos most of the time-all power, very little, if any, train. One of the units, CP 9781, the last of the set, went south the previous day on a grain train.

Peeking out
Title:  Peeking out
Description:  The grain train I shot in Gentry has now made it to Siloam Springs, but is holding north of County Club Rd, most likely waiting on a meet. I had other things to do, so cut off the chase here, leaving my train hiding in the bushes next to the Cobb feed mill.

Splitsville
Title:  Splitsville
Description:  I had taken the RV out to slosh the water tank-Id put a bleach solution in to sanitize, and I like to get it all around the clean water tank, so drive around for 30 minutes or so for a good splash-and wound up in Gentry. As I crossed the tracks on the Ark 12 overpass, I saw the signal was green on the main. I couldnt stop on the bridge, so I took a position on Collins St at the crossing, catching this 95 car southbound grain move splitting the signals at the south end of town.

Some days there just aint much
Title:  Some days there just aint much
Description:  Many of my chases start with a visit to the transfer station in town, when I go up to drop recycling. I usually wait til the bins are way too full, so it takes a while. A lot of the time, I catch something while m there, or shortly after. Today, no such luck. After riding up and down through town, finally a clear at North Siloam Springs. It turned out to be this four unit lite power set heading north. Oh well. No big time railroading today.

DPUs away
Title:  DPUs away
Description:  The thing about shuttles is that they keep the power on both ends, just running the trains back and forth. I heard this guy coming north from my house, and went into town to see where he was. In the process of checking out all the possible signals, he got by me at Country Club Rd. A quick turn around, and I got to Davidson Rd in time to miss the head end, but I got the back. A BNSF SD 70M helps the CP power.

First catch
Title:  First catch
Description:  I heard a southbound from the house, and took off. I cant get through Siloam and still catch one of these trains, so I usually take Ark 59 south and US 62 to Westville, which allows me to get the across the field farm shot most of the time. It worked today, I caught this southbound grain train here in bucolic splendor rolling 100 cars of midwest grain toward Mexico.

Didnt quite make it
Title:  Didnt quite make it
Description:  I like the shots at Baron, since there is a long tangent approaching from the north, allowing several views here. Sometimes I dont get them all; even with a 65 MPH speed limit on US 59, its two lane, and there are an amazing(to me) number of people who are content to run 50 MPH there. So I dont always get the tele shot. Still, the shot is pretty good there, and I did OK for getting sandbagged by a slowpoke en route.

Waiting on a meet
Title:  Waiting on a meet
Description:  Wed come back from lunch to find there were two trains in Siloam, a dodger, and what looked like a combined 262/180, but not where we could get the head end of either train. We headed home to drop off the leftovers, and get a bathroom break, and came back into town. The 262 was moving, so we took off for Watts. Once there, we saw this northbound 261 train waiting. Hed meet the 262 and the dodger before going north. Waiting on other trains would become the order of the day. He met another southbound at Siloam, a coal train at Gentry, and two southbounds at Noel. I wondered if he would ever get to Pittsburg.

Surprise!!
Title:  Surprise!!
Description:  We pulled down to the crossing here at Mt Olive Rd, just north of Dorsey siding-the one place he didnt have a meet-and settled in, wanting to get the shot here with the creek high. Theres a crossing about a half mile to the south that you can usually hear them blowing for, but today for some reason, it didnt happen, and we got surprised. Still a decent shot.

Description:  I usually get the shot of a northbound crossing Butler Creek here at Noel, but this was as close as I was getting today. Headed to breakfast
Title:  Headed to breakfast
Description:  We got done with what I call "stretchy class," a senior low impact aerobic class that keeps us moving, and does some good for our old bones. We get done around 1030, so breakfast is the next order of business. Ill often take Davidson Rd out to Ark 59 if were going to Gentry, as we were this day. Aside from being a fairly quick ride out to the state highway, it also passes automatic 226-5, which was flashing yellow as we crossed the tracks. I set up, and this southbound grain train was on us a few minutes later, with an AC 44 that was pretending it was CP 2816.

Smoking it up now
Title:  Smoking it up now
Description:  Davidson Road is at the top of a long climb out of a section called Sleepy Hollow, a dip between here and Gentry down into a creek valley. Unit trains really work here, and this 101 car grain train is no exception, and it shows as the leader smokes from a bad turbo as it makes a final push to crest the grade.

This is not the 4877 you are looking for
Title:  This is not the 4877 you are looking for
Description:  It was inevitable that, sooner or later, I would come across the 4877. Unfortunately, not the celebrated Tuscan red GG 1-though I did see and ride behind it over 40 years ago-but the KCS ES 44 that is just another GE in the fleet. I was returning from the I 181 chase, and happened upon this northbound M 261 just as I rolled into downtown Gravette. Hes got 57 cars in tow as he rolls into the gathering gloom. In an odd twist, second unit CP 8769 is the second CP 8769 I've seen; the other was an RS 18 at Mechanicville on the D&H in 1984.

Rolling to the meet
Title:  Rolling to the meet

Reflections
Title:  Reflections
Description:  The new camera came with an 18-55mm zoom, so now I have one where the auto focus works, which is a nice change from the two I had. The southbound oil train nears the signals at North Stilwell, the headlights reflecting in the lens in the dim light.

Caught up, southbound version
Title:  Caught up, southbound version
Description:  I took off after the oil train, getting even with the head end at Westville, but not able to get far enough ahead for a shot there. I beat him to Baron, where I got him passing the old church.
