Slowly I turn |
Description: |
Train 413 rolls slowly through the south end of Bevier St, at what used to be BX cabin, as the rear of its train is stretched out to BD. Once clear of those obstacles, it will start its run to Belden tunnel in earnest. Todays effort has six units-including one of SOO's five SD60M's-for its 128 cars, a heavy train in this era. |

Train 413s six units are pulling hard to lift 128 cars to Belden tunnel. That non-dynamic brake ex B&M GP 40 won't be much help on the downhill side of the tunnel, as its lack of DB's will prevent the use of them on the trailing three units. |

Different |
Description: |
The D&H, as a condition of the Conrail merger, got access to a number of points in the northeasu to foster some level of competition. One of them was Potomac Yard in Alexandria VA, which served to make connections with Southern, now NS, and Chessie, as well as the RF&P. All those would eventually go into CSX. Power from the connections ran through, so it was not unusual to see CSX and NS component diesels on RPPY and PYRP. We see RPPY heading for Virginia on the ex Reading, with the usual CSX and NS power, among them an ex SCL GP 40. It was a daily event, but decidedly different from the steady diet of blue provided by Conrail. |

Chessie power |
Description: |
It was still early enough in the CSX reign that much of the power had not really mixed up. As a result, it was fairly common to see solid sets of Chessie power on the Sea Land trains. We have such a set here on SLN 3, waiting to get onto the Tier next to the old D&H station. |

Ready to go back |
Description: |
CSX power often ran through on PYRP from Potomac Yard, and was turned at Binghamton. One such set is seen at East Binghamton. It will take RPPY south later this afternoon. Note the ex L&N unit. Didnt see many of these. Note the ex RDG unit switching in the background with some ex Reading box cars. |

RPPY |
Description: |
RPPY rolls south behind a set of CSX power, which was typical south of Binghamton. Here it is approaching the PA 706 bridge, just south of New Milford. This shot is much more difficult now, as its become quite treed in. |

Catching rays |
Description: |
RPPY rolls south out of East Binghamton at Shaws Rd in Conklin behind a set of CSX power, including an untouched-except for the number-L&N GP 40. The sun had been playing hide and seek all day, so it was nice to get this in one of the few sunny moments. |

Rolling by Crystal City |
Description: |
A new(in the mid 80s) development in the DC area was Crystal City in Arlington VA, which sat next to National Airport(its Reagan now) and alongside the RF&P at a place known as RO, where it ended and the Pennsy began. B&O trains also came through here to reach Potomac Yard, which itself would fall to changing freight patterns over the next decade, becoming a fertile field for new real estate. CSX melded the RF&P-still independent then-and the B&O lines north of DC, connecting them with the southern half of CSX at Richmond. Heres train 405 rolling onto the RF&P at RO behind a mix of the new companys power. |

One that got away |
Description: |
South of Binghamton, it was not unusual to see Chessie or NS power on RPPY and PYRP. North of Binghamton, not so much. This Chessie unit, now working for CSX, but still lettered WM, was borrowed for a trip north, and is now returning to its usual haunts from its short adventure, leading as the train arrives at Binghamton. |

WM unit |
Description: |
I normally dont shoot mid consist units, but anything lettered Western Maryland was getting rare by this time. A Chessie painted WM unit is trailing on this 172 at North Collier. Wish I'd shot the unit behind it-a GP 30 in Seaboard paint. |
