Head end from the dutch door
Title:  Head end from the dutch door
Description:  One of the things I miss most about riding trains from the era up to about the mid 80s was riding the dutch door. Now the practically wont let you in the vestibules to cross between cars. This is a view of the front of the train as we rode through the Utah desert.

Old style
Title:  Old style
Description:  In todays world of sterile rights of way-pole lines gone, new signals, etc, the Tier was a throwback. As a backwater of a large system, it did not get the attention of the ex Pennsy, or the NYC, and for most of Conrail's existence, except for the power and rolling stock, looked almost exactly like the EL. One such scene is near MP 320 in Adrian, where we see OIEL rolling along the poles-the wires were still active-and theres even a semaphore in the distance.

Good chase
Title:  Good chase
Description:  OIEL was a hard train to get. Sometimes it ran before dawn in the Tier, so photo ops were limited. Another inhibiting factor was that it would often yard at Gang Mills, and a crew would not be called until much later in the day. I was fortunate on this cold(10 degrees) Saturday morning to catch it just as the light got good, and chase to Gang Mills. Here it is passing the semaphore at MP 259.

Down the valley
Title:  Down the valley
Description:  OIEL approaches the signal at MP 325, one of a variety of styles on the Erie, which seemed to be schizophrenic when it came to signal specs. There were these "traffic light" types, targets, and semaphores. The train is leaving the Canisteo valley behind, and will shortly be in Hornell, where it will go west on the ex Erie main to Olean and Jamestown. Still kicking myself for not chasing it there, instead of following the more mundane BUOI east.

Coal empties on the Vestal Spur
Title:  Coal empties on the Vestal Spur
Description:  By the 1980s there was little traffic on the Vestal Spur, except for National Pipe and Plastic, which was the last customer on the Vestal side of the river; and NYSEG's Goudy Station in Johnson City. Here WABH 11 is pulling empties past the abandoned factories of Johnson City. This was once the 70 MPH DL&W main line.

Off the Corning Secondary
Title:  Off the Corning Secondary
Description:  The Southern Tier picnic train comes off the Corning Secondary onto the Southern Tier, rolling behind the yard office and shop off the 1951 connection to the Erie. This was part of the line relocation that took the tracks out of downtown Corning, where they ran in the street. The NYC line ran on the Erie to what is now CP Corning, under the NY 414 overpass, where the ex NYC line splits to head north along Seneca Lake, connecting with what is now the CSX Chicago Line at Lyons. The GP 40 will pull the train through CP W Glass onto the Corning Secondary, clear the signal at North Glass, and cut off. It will go back to Gang Mills, the passenger train, now with the Es in the lead, will head east on the Tier.

Description:  The Southern Tier picnic train got a unit on the rear at Gang Mills to assist with the return trip on the Corning Secondary, since there was no place to turn the power at Hammond Lake. This GP 40 did the honors, sharing the job with a pair of E 8s on the head end.

One other building is notable for its turn of the century architecture, the Kilmer Building. At one time, the DLW had sidings serving it, now all abandoned. TV 79
Title:  TV 79
Description:  One of the hotter van trains to run the Water Level Route was TV 79, which was a djrect connection to the Santa Fe at Chicago, along with TVLA. The two often ran close to each other, one almost on the others blocks. Here, TV 79 passes the old NYC 1957 station at Dewivt with 74 TOFC and 28 stacks. Even at this late date, it was not uncommon to find sets of 4 motor power on van trains.

DLW side
Title:  DLW side
Description:  WABH 11, the Binghamton local job, workr the Agway feed mill. The plant was served by a remnant of the Lackawanna S&U line. By this time, the bridges over Bevier St had been consolidated onto one overpass, high enough to clear a 13'6" trailer, so this track that was once the S&U main rack, had been cut back to allow enough room to switch the plant, with through trains going through the D&H yard, where a white ex KCS unit can be seen to the right of the last car of this train.

Dropping the blade
Title:  Dropping the blade
Description:  I wanted to get the shot of BUOI splitting the semaphores, but a Conrail crew was working on the installation of new crossing protection. I backed off a few hundred feet, and got the blades, and the crew. The crossing here, Ayers Rd, previously had only crossbucks, and now would have gates and flashers. The semaphores would last another year. The roadway to the right of the tracks, and where the relay case is for the crossing protection, was once the LV Auburn Branch, which ran parallel to the EL from Owego to Waverly.

Meet next to a cornfield
Title:  Meet next to a cornfield
Description:  This was not a cornfield meet in the traditional sense-the trains passed without incident, but there was surely a cornfield in the distance as MTPL met BUOI just west of Tioga Center.

Last chance
Title:  Last chance
Description:  After a day of chasing NW 611 on a trip from Buffalo to Conneaut OH, we called it a day and headed home. Our last shot of the day was this TV 79, which had left North Bergen NJ that morning, now rolling though Erie on its mad dash to an ATSF connection in Chicago with 95 cars of TOFC. Halfway there!!
