Rare widecab |
Description: |
SOO had five SD60Ms, which occasionally made their way to the east. It was always good to see them, especially in the lead, which was unusual. Got lucky this day, as 164 rolls through Bevier St with not only the SOO widecab, but a WC unit as well. The irony is that WC was a SOO predecessor, but is now part of the CN system. |

CSX detour |
Description: |
During summer track work season, CSX would send detour trains over NYSW on a daily basis. Mostly these were low priority trains, usually Q 403 and 404. Q 156 was a higher priority train that often made the trip via Binghamton. We see it here passing Kirkwood Industrial Park along US 11 with a UP leader, with 46 freight and 79 stacks for Jersey. |

Rare sight |
Description: |
Not the power, there are still tons of EMD 40s on the UP, and the paint scheme is the same as its been since the 1930s. The unusual thing about this train is its a northbound on the ex MKT. North of Wagoner, he UP uses directional running, since from there to KC, it has both the ex MP via Coffeyville Kan, and the ex MKT via Parsons Kan. It uses the MKT from KC almost exclusively for southbounds, except for this local based in Pryor, OK, 25 miles to the north. I caught it en route to my grandsons football game in nearby Coweta. Football and trains, cant go wrong-and they won!! |

Real find |
Description: |
I dont shoot a lot of short lines and regionals as a rule. Not that I dont like them, they are often hard to find running. Unlike UP or BNSF, their operations are often not obvious to an outsider, and since I often have limited time to go exploring, I dont take the time to seek them out. So I was pleasantly surprised when driving through Panama City to see the gates going down across US 98. I grabbed the shot, getting this 21 car local with, of all things, a New England Central unit leading, about as far as one can get from Gulf Coast Florida in distance and temperament. |

Description: |
One of the concessions for the UP-MP-WP merger was that the Rio Grande get rights into Kansas City. They ran over the ex Mopac from Pueblo, entering the area at Paola, where the line crossed the MKT-which would also soon get gobbled up by the yellow monster-and the BN. Heres a wfstbound train passing Paola en route to home rails at Pueblo. |

Double whammy |
Description: |
This shows two UP predecessors in one, although the line was already UP by then. This is a Rio Grande trackage rights train approaching Wagstaff Kansas on the ex Mopac line to Colorado, which DRGW used to access connections at KC as part of the conditions of the UP-MP-WP merger. The scene is one that epitomizes prairie railroading-long view, long train, long line of code line poles into the distance. |

Knoche power |
Description: |
A mix of power sits at KCS Knoche yard. Also known as Joint Agency-it served KCS, MILW, DRGW-it was the Kansas City home of the Rio Grande, which came into KC via trackage rights over the ex MP from Pueblo. It was a good place to catch DRGW power. |

Tunnel motor |
Description: |
The other road to get tunnel motors was Rio Grande, which had plenty of them. One of their SD40T-2s sits at Knoche yard in KC |

For some reason I do not now recall, DRGW 5771 was not on the train this day. Instead we had a GP40-2. Ah well... |

Head end from the dutch door |
Description: |
One of the things I miss most about riding trains from the era up to about the mid 80s was riding the dutch door. Now the practically wont let you in the vestibules to cross between cars. This is a view of the front of the train as we rode through the Utah desert. |
