There were several NS trains that ran on CP south of Binghamton. One of them was 41T, an Enola-Toronto train that came up through CPs East Binghamton yard before gaining the NS Southern Tier Line at BD. It usually had CN power, and I loved the irony of the competitor using the same tracks. It was even better when 41T would run through as CP was getting one of their own trains out. Today is one of those days, as CP 419's power is moving onto the 1 runner from the north end of the shop, as 41T rolls its 75 cars through the yard behind a solid set of CN units. |

We see 165 rolling north behind a typical set of 40s, with 91 cars in tow, at GR cabin. This was one of my favorite spots to catch a northbound. It was easy to get to, right off NY 7 in Afton-and made a good prop. It was also close enough to Binghamton to chase here, get the shot and get back. A bonus was that there were often meets here, which meant a train both ways. These signals will be replaced by NS, who now owns the line, and one more distinctive feature of northeastern railroading will vanish. |

This view of 419 from Lester Av in Johnson City is notable not so much for the train, but how much has changed in the area over the years. The piles of dirt beyond the train were once the Endicott Johnson Paracord plant. That area will become a Wal Mart in a few years. Progress, I suppose, but not necessarily improvement. The SD 40s powering the train, like the EJ plant, will soon become a memory. |
