Lite Es
Title:  Lite Es
Description:  A pair of E8s moves to the pocket track to wait for a train from New York. NJT 4326 shows the second variation of the "disco" scheme to grace the E's, platinum must with stripes. It's a lot less garish than the white that they first tried.

Power change
Title:  Power change
Description:  After the GG 1s were retired in 1983, NJ Transit acquired some second hand Amtrak E 60s to cover their North Jersey Coast trains on the NY&LB as far as South Amboy. Here we see the swap complete, and the E 60 headed to the yard. Somehow, its just not the same!!

M&E 14
Title:  M&E 14
Description:  The Hoboken Festival drew a variety of equipment ro the ex DLW station in Hoboken, mostly from NJ Transit, but also from connecting lines. Morristown & Erie usually pitched in with a couple of Alcos. This year did not disappoint, as the sent an S 4 and a C430. Heres S 4 14.

Disco E 60
Title:  Disco E 60
Description:  I dont recall that any of the other E 60s got repainted in this scheme. This one was at Hoboken for the festival, and may have been painted primarily for the purpose of showing it off there. The E60s never had the success of the GG 1s, and were soon replaced by a variety of European design electrics in the late 80s and 90s. This unit had to be towed in, as it was powered by alternating current and could not run on the DLW 3000 volt DC network.

Title:  New era
Description:  Contrast this photo to the shot my dad took from roughly the same angle in 1964. Here we have an NJ Transit E60 ready to head into Penn Station with a Bay Head train, and an Amtrak SW 1. Not quite the same as GG 1s and a horde of P 70s.

Title:  Short ride
Description:  The link for CNJ trains to get to home rails from the PRR at Newark was a short stretch of the ex LV. There was one stop there, at Roselle Park. Here, NJT 4119 makes its stop and will soon be on the CNJ at Aldene.

Title:  Newark train
Description:  A CNJ side train that originated from Newark passes the ready tracks at South Amboy behind a pair of ex CNJ GP40Ps. From the equipment, this is the former "Bay Head Empire Builder," named for the cars which came from BN, and ran til the early 80's still in BN and GN colors.

EL cab car
Title:  EL cab car
Description:  The EL Comet cars would become the standard for NJ Transit. As newer orders came on line, the cars began to roam systemwide, so it was not a total surprise to find one of the cab cars leading on the ex CNJ. They were a vast improvement over the 1920s era cars and long distance hand me downs that dominated the line in the 70s and early 80s.

CNJ scene
Title:  CNJ scene
Description:  NJT 4115 leads 5 cars west to Raritan on the ex CNJ at Bound Brook. The station can be seen at the right of the photo. The connection where Reading and B&O trains for Philly left CNJ trackage rights into Jersey City is about a mile to the west, and is at this time removed, as that service ended several years prior to this photo. There were once four tracks here on the CNJ.

Title:  Ready for the evening
Description:  An ex Amtrak E 60 is ready to go into Penn Station for a trip to South Amboy later this afternoon. The E 60s were to take over the role of the GG 1s, but never seemed to quite live up to their predecessors repuation.

Title:  Patched
Description:  Like many NJ Transit units of that era, this E 60 wears the colors of a previous owner, only with a patch paint job showing its true owner. This one will make a trip out to South Amboy later today, just as its predecessors did for decades.

Pushing to Newark
Title:  Pushing to Newark
Description:  The ex CNJ Raritan Line is now all push pull with F40s and Comets, a far dry from less than ten years ago, when it was still possible to see ex CNJ GP40Ps and GP7Ps with 1920s era coaches plying the line, which then went to Phillipsburg on the Delaware River. The new equipment is more comfortable and reliable, but I miss the aroma of brake shoe smoke coming in the open windows. Heres a rebuilt GP 40 type pushing a set of Comets toward Newark Penn Station for a connection to New York.

Pushing across
Title:  Pushing across
Description:  The trains on the North Jersey Coast didnt seem to follow a pattern in the post GG 1 age. Unlike that era, where the power was almost always on the outbound end going away from New York, now the trains seemed to work either way. Here we have the cab car leading south as the train rolls over the river bridge.

Title:  On the CNJ
