Builder in Jersey
Title:  Builder in Jersey
Description:  New Jersey acquired a number of ex BN cars in the mid 70s, many of them still in their BN and GN colors. They ran as a set for years on the Bay Head trains, giving it the name "Bay Head Empire Builder." Heres one of them on one of the Aldene Plan Bay Head trains at Newark

Arrows in the station
Title:  Arrows in the station
Description:  A set of Arrows stops at Newark. This was a shorter train, as it stopped entirely within the train shed. The train at left is a Raritan train that will shortly leave for the ex CNJ, with one of their cab cars home built from a 1925 period coach leading.

Ex CNJ Bay Head train
Title:  Ex CNJ Bay Head train
Description:  The CNJ trains to the shore were moved to Penn Station in 1967, allowing the CNJ to close its Jersey City station, and ease connections to New York. Those trains continued to use CNJ power and coaches, and originated from Newark Penn Station. Heres one with ex CNJ 4105 taking on passengers.

CNJ power
Title:  CNJ power
Description:  A Newark bound Bay Head train approaches its station stop at South Amboy. It will do its stop and continue to Newark without an engine change, as this is a former CNJ run. For some reason, I picked the gloomiest days to go out and ride.

Es to the ready track
Title:  Es to the ready track
Description:  A pair of E8s make their way from the engine house to the pocket track beyond the station to await the next GG 1 powered trains arrival. The paint scheme on the lead unit is just one of several NJT tried during the early 80s, though the nose lifting lugs give this away as an ex Pennsy unit.

Crusader
Title:  Crusader
Description:  Ex Reading RDCs held down the two remaining trains covering the service that was once hourly from the CNJ Jersey City terminal to Philadelphia. Now down to two trains each way daily-the Wall Street and the Crusader-they now ran in and out of Penn Station as part of the Aldene plan. This one is on the Crusader, about to launch its trip down the ex LV, CNJ and Reading. These runs would be discontinued shortly after this date, replaced by a train that NJ Transit ran as far as West Trenton.

Reading RDCs
Title:  Reading RDCs
Description:  One of the more obscure parts of NJ Transits operations was a pair of Newark-Philadelphia trains to Reading Terminal. There were two pairs, the Crusader and the Wall Street, which ran Philly-Newark in the morning, and returned to Philly in the afternoon. These were vestiges of once hourly service behind streamlined Pacifics that ran to and from Jersey City via CNJ and Reading. By 1981 this service was running with RDCs from Newark as part of the Aldene Plan, which got all CNJ trains out of their Jersey City terminal and consolidated passenger runs out of Newark on the PRR. This was a fun little train, having a cadre of regulars who enjoyed a lively time on the afternoon runs. They moved, too. I rode in the rear cab for part of the trip over the CNJ to Bound Brook; we were making 65 MPH. This was the Crusader boarding at Newark.

MUs at Penn Station
Title:  MUs at Penn Station
Description:  Newark Penn Station was a cavernous affair, and handled not only NJ Transit and Amtrak trains, but also PATH trains from Manhattan, as that operation was once the Pennsy run Hudson and Manhattan system. Here a Trenton bound train pauses on its way west.

MUs to New York
Title:  MUs to New York
Description:  I never took much notice to MU trains; I lived on a line that was entirely run with MU cars(LIRR Port Washington branch) so they were not a big deal. Jerseys were no different, and I figured, why waste film on glorified subway cars. While an afterthought on a day of seeking out the Gs and Es of legend, I grabbed this shot of a set of Arrows leaving South Amboy. Not too bad, I think. Note the approaching Bay Head train with a GP40P on the near track.

CNJ action
Title:  CNJ action
Description:  The Central RR of New Jersey main hosted trains to Raritan, as well as several to Phillipsburg every day. One of the more important stations was Bound Brook, where at this time it was still possible to get a train to Reading Terminal in Philadelphia twice a day. By this time, the four track main was mostly a mockery of what had once been a busy railroad. Fittingly, one of CNJs GP40Ps handles a mid day Raritan train here.

Newark bound
Title:  Newark bound
Description:  A going away shot of a Newark bound train from Phillipsburg-the mid day P-burg train usually got ex Santa Fe or Rock Island long haul cars-on the ex CNJ. The power would run around the trains at the end of the run, making for a challenging view for the engineers. CNJ did have cab cars on some trains, adapted from their 1925 coaches. They typically ran on the east end of the train, though there were not enough to cover all the trains.

CNJ power on the NY&LB
Title:  CNJ power on the NY&LB
Description:  The NY and Long Branch was jointly operated by PRR and CNJ prior to Conrail. CNJs trains originated from their Jersey City terminal until 1967, when the Aldene plan moved them into Newark Penn Station, with a cross platform transfer from New York connections. Here we see on of them, led by GP40P 4105. Note the crossing gates. They were manually operated at this time.

Title:  NJ Transit 5902

Title:  Ex CNJ cab car
Description:  When the Aldene plan was established in 1967, trains were set up to run push-pull. Two units to Phillipsburg
Title:  Two units to Phillipsburg
Description:  NJ Transit continued running two rush hour trains to Phillipsburg NJ, as well as a mid day run, until 1983. Here one of the rush hour trains is ready to go from Newark Penn Station behind a GP7P-note the squared off end on the long hood of the lead unit-and a GP40P. NJ Transit adopted the paint scheme used on the EL U34CHs until it came up with the "disco" scheme in the mid 80s. Many of the fans thought this was an elegant paint scheme, and that the new scheme was not an improvement.
