Description:  DNBU rolls toward Buffalo with 107 cars from North Yard. In an earlier era, this train might have come across Canada on NYC subsidiary Canada Southern. Conrail sold that line several years prior to this photo, and it is no longer a through route, requiring a stateside journey for Detroit-Buffalo traffic.

Description:  TV 303 has just crossed Starrucca Viaduct and is now at CP Lanesboro, the location of Jefferson Jct, where the Erie had a line connecting to the D&H Penn Division. It has been only recently taken up as it was used to access the part of the D&H still in place while the Belden Hill project enlarged the tunnel. The right of way is now hidden under the snowpack to the right of the tall pole to the right of the train, never to see a passing train again.

Description:  Conrail by the late 80s had become an intermodal powerhouse, and it was reaching a point where if you spent a day trackside on the ex NYC or PRR, the number of van trains about equalled the merchandise trains. TOFC was still pretty common in those days, and this train was typical.

Description:  This was a pretty common power set on Conrail in those days. They had gone big for GEs, and had many 4 axle units, which did exactly what the did on the NYC-handle fast intermodal trains. The descendants of the U25B have 106 platforms and 3 COFC in hand as they head west.

Description:  One of the hotter van trains to run the Water Level Route was TV 79, which was a direct connection to the Santa Fe at Chicago, along with TVLA. The two often ran close to each other, one almost on the others blocks. Here, TV 79 passes the old NYC 1957 station at Dewitt with 74 TOFC and 28 stacks. Even at this late date, it was not uncommon to find sets of 4 motor power on van trains.

Description:  A 58 car eastbound TV train rolls past the 1957 NYC station built at Dewitt to replace the Art Deco station downtown on Erie Blvd when the passenger line was abandoned to build I 690. That building served as a bus terminal until the transportation center out at Carousel Mall opened in the late 90s, an event which also closed this station.
