New old power |
Description: |
CP was fond of picking up second hand power, a trait that would follow them into the D&H era, when they would pick up SD40s from the likes of NS, GATX, and KCS. In 1985, it was the Quebec North Shore and Labrador, one of whose recently acquired units is at St Luc |

I'm standing on the Choteau Trafficway, a great overhead spot to watch the action at the west end of the yard. Note a BNSF coal train in the distance; it will soon be heading south on the KCS. Splitting the semaphores |
Description: |
The Tier was known for its many Erie RR era semaphores. There were at least two pairs, one at Arkport, about five miles west of Hornell, rarely seen due to the walk in nature of their location; and this pair at Tioga Center, which were adjacent to NY 17C, and easy to photograph. ABBU, running wrong main, passes between them on its way west. |

ABBU at E Glass |
Description: |
This photo shows the area on the east side of Corning that was CP E Glass for much of Conrails existence. The relay case can be seen to the left of track 1 at the crossovers. The lead to the Corning Secondary is the track going off to the left at the lower left corner of the frame. The E Glass/N Glass/W Glass complex formed a wye that connected the Corning Secondary and the Southern Tier Line. The Corning Secondary had been the NYC line along Seneca Lake to Geneva and a connection with the Water Level Route, now Conrails Chicago Line. Trains such as SYEN would come down this line, taking the W Glass leg of the wye and roll through Gang Mills Yard, where there was a connection back to the old alignment on the east side of the Tioga River. That line went down the Grand Canyon of PA to a connection with the Pennsy at Jersey Shore PA on the Buffalo Line. This was part of the 1951 realignment that took both the Central and the Erie out of the street in downtown Corning, a route now followed by NY 352, locally Dennison Pkwy. To the left of the existing track is an empty right of way. This was the DLW, which parallelled the Erie here, having returned to its own line just east of here after the 1959 facilities coordination, whereby the DLW abandoned its main as a through route from the west side of Binghamton. Here at Gibson it returned to its own line to reach Bath, Cohocton, and Groveland on its way to Buffalo. That line would be downgraded, and mostly abandoned after the 1960 EL merger. Prior to 1959, the DLW ran next to the Erie from here to Horseheads, where the lines separated to enter Elmira. |

Getting started |
Description: |
I dont recall now if I was on a day off, or this was just after work. I had regular hours, but they differed every day. This was taken on a Tuesday, so its likely it was my day off. We start close to home, on the tangent near MP 232 between Campville and Owego, with the red face of a SOO SD leading 167 west into the sun. |

Long jump |
Description: |
After getting the 167 at Campville, I jumped down to Smithboro, about 13 miles, taking NY 17 to exit 62, since there was no way I was beating him through Owego. I didnt want to risk getting scooped at Tioga Center, so I ran down to the west end of Smithboro, where the tracks come up to the road. |

Wide view |
Description: |
The next jump was an easy one. I just had to step on it. This is the view from NY 17C near the Tioga transfer station at MP 249 between Barton and Waverly. It was a good "grab and go" spot. The third unit is a classic, one of SOO's original SD 40's. |

East side |
Description: |
If a train was going fast enough, or I got stuck behind some slowpoke-its amazing the number of people who drive like they just dont care if they ever get where theyre going-I usually could not beat a train to downtown Waverly with its model railroad like buildings. So I had to go with other options. In this case, I grabbed the shot from about where the Tier crossed over the Ithaca Secondary, the former LV main. A SOO unit heading into the sun with a big train(99 freight, and 56 stack platforms) looks good in the late afternoon |

270 with an odd mix |

During the mid 90s, Conrail leased out some of its power, including some SD40s, such as this one trailing an ex SOO unit on 270 rolling past Endwell Rug along the George F Highway. |

Colorful pushers |
Description: |
The second daytime move of a BUAB with SOO power was Dec 9, this time northbound, leaving Binghamton late morning. The head end was an unexpected treat, but the pushers were also not to be ignored. An EMD lease unit in an attractive paint job reminiscent of the last Rock scheme was teamed with a candy apple red SOO unit. Here they are pushing at Fuller Rd. |

Lots of changes |
Description: |
Everything. As we look at BUABs pushers, and EMD lease unit and a red SOO SD 40, note also the rest of this view. I am standing on what was the DLW Utica Branch, now abandoned. The track in the foreground is the new connection from the D&H to the NYSWs ex DLW line; you can see the Old State Rd crossing at far left. This was done as part of a project to eliminate the three overpasses at Bevier St, one ex DLW, two D&H, none of which was high enough to clear a standard 13'6" trailer, making access to businesses on Broad Av a challenge. As part of that project, the NYSW gained access to its line via a new connection north of Bevier St, requiring its trains to go through that yard. The D&H was largely unaffected, except for realigning its tracks onto the new overpass. The train looks like its climbing to the sky due to the downgrade on the NYSW connector; its not as bad as it looks. |
