Wash rack train |
Description: |
The Pennsy, in their wisdom, built this loop track to allow passenger trains coming from Penn Station to enter Sunnyside yard. Along the loop track that passed under the LIRR was a washer, which cleaned the outside of the trains as they approached the yard. This one is about to get a bath prior to entering the yard. The yard itself is in the middle background, and was once the largest passenger yard in the world. |

Headed for the tunnel |
Description: |
The Ringling Bros circus train is about to enter the East River tunnel at Hunterspoint Av in Queens behind a trio of E60s, which just took over from three LIRR MP15ACs. The train will be turned over to Conrail once in Jersey, and spotted near the Lincoln Tunnel entrance. Tomorrow the equipment and animals will be taken through the tunnel to their show in Madison Square Garden. I am standing on the LIRR Hunterspoint Av station, MP 1 in the foreground is the distance from the Long Island City float bridges, now long abandoned. The subway train behind the Amtrak power is the No 7 Flushing-Times Square train, seen about to leave the elevated line is has been on since just after leaving Main St, and enter the tunnel to make its Hunterspoint Av stop, then Vernon-Jackson, then on into Manhattan. The cars date to 1963, just prior to the Worlds Fair. |

Disco E 60 |
Description: |
I dont recall that any of the other E 60s got repainted in this scheme. This one was at Hoboken for the festival, and may have been painted primarily for the purpose of showing it off there. The E60s never had the success of the GG 1s, and were soon replaced by a variety of European design electrics in the late 80s and 90s. This unit had to be towed in, as it was powered by alternating current and could not run on the DLW 3000 volt DC network. |

Description: |
By this time in 1983, NJ Transit had acquired some Amtrak E 60s to replace he GG 1s, which were slated for retirement. This one has just cut off its train from New York at South Amboy, and continues the time honored tradition of the engine change, pulling past the crossivers to head for the small yard. Note the crossing guard shanty and the old hand operated gates. These would soon pass into history. |
