Headed up the branch
Title:  Headed up the branch
Description:  An eastbound Oyster Bay train with a typical consist of MP 15s at both ends has departed Mineola and is about to take the switch to head up the Oyster Bay Branch at Nassau tower. "P" on the nose of 161 indicates it is set up to provide head end power for the train.

MP 15 power pack
Title:  MP 15 power pack
Description:  An MP 15 AC set up to run as a power pack trails a Montauk train about to roll through Queens interlocking. The five cars immediately ahead of the engine are parlors, still a prominent feature of east end trains on Long Island at this time.

Wrong end east
Title:  Wrong end east
Description:  Typically, the push pull sets on Long Island ran with the power pack on the west end. This one seems to have gotten turned around, as the MP 15 providing train power is facing east, with GP 38-2 272 on the west end. The Stony Brook station is one of the more attractive stations on the island, surprisingly small considering it's adjacent to the SUNY Stony Brook campus, out of the photo to the left.

Trading power
Title:  Trading power
Description:  Usually train 4012 gets one MP 15-I dont think I ever saw it with an FA-going east. Todays train had two. My guess is they needed to swap a unit at Montauk.

Track 4
Title:  Track 4
Description:  Sometimes the LIRR would run the circus train across to track 1 at Queens, as it runs the Main Line to Harold, where Amtrak power takes over. Today, the movement director has decided to run it on track 4, since it will go to Yard A, and not be handed off to Amtrak. It will take the freight bypass tracks on the south side of Jamaica station, then run the Montauk Branch, entering Sunnyside Yard A to back down to the old staging yard for the LI City ferry. There it will spot the cars for unloading.

MP 15 in blue and yellow
Title:  MP 15 in blue and yellow
Description:  In the late 1980s, LIRR decided to change their image from the blue and white that had been the scheme since the early 70s, back to the blue and yellow MTA colors they used when the MTA originally took over in the 1960s. Heres one of the MP 15s in the new paint. Note the first car of the train had the headlight plated over, a sign it was a former MU car converted to diesel service.

New paint
Title:  New paint
Description:  One of the new developments since I moved away from NY City five years earlier was a retro paint scheme, somewhat similar to the New York State colors used from the mid 60s, when MTA took over the railroad from the Pennsy, til 1977 when the blue and white scheme was adopted. Here, MP 15 161 rolls away from the camera in the new scheme on its way to Oyster Bay.
