Dark side |
Description: |
Normally I shoot this from the lit side, which has a good view in a tele shot of the train streteched out into the next curve south of town. This time I decided to go for the nose lit, but dark side of the train. It would be more effective if there wasnt so much clutter, as I could work the station/museum into the photo without a pole in front of it. This does have the advantage of allowing me a quick getaway, as I dont have to let the whole train pass before resuming the chase, though hed meet a southbound at Dorsey, just to the north, and Id get him anyway. |

First inkling |
Description: |
I was on my way to Stilwell, so decided to take US 59 south from Siloam Springs. When I got to Watts, there was a northbound with four UP units coming up the siding. I shot him at Watts, then went to the bridge, anticipating a meet, since the UP train had rolled on to the north end of the siding. I wasnt there three minutes when this southbound grain train came into view. I got it in the sun, too, something of a suprise, since there was a lot of in and out with the cloud cover. I didnt get so lucky with the UP power, though-got dinked on that one. |

The day begins |
Description: |
I started back for home mid day on Dec 11, taking NM 47 to US 60. My first encounter was with a pair of trains at the NM 47 crossing, known as Sais. This westbound, with an eclectic mix of 60 freight, 39 stack platforms, 8 autoracks and two articulated racks, has just met a double move, a stack train with an oil train coupled up to the rear. I figured to catch him at the top of Abo Canyon. Not to be, I did get him at Mountainair, but othrwise, it was a futile chase. The Ferromex unit was a common sight on trains here. |

Description: |
I heard a southbound coming, so ran down to Westville OK to head him off. My typical approach is, if I don't see the train is imminent, to work north along US 59, since sometimes it's a manifest working at Watts, or is holding for a meet there. Today turned out to be both. The southbound M train sits at the south end of Watts, framed by the northbound home signals. Its waiting for a northbound empty coal train before resuming his pick up here. |
