Westbound extra |
Description: |
This westbound extra train snuck through Mineola in the teeth of rush hour, something that was very unusual on the Long Island, where only about 10% of their revenue was from freight. It was not uncommon to see freights on some of the lines in Chicago, where they were not shy about mixing a 100 car train in with the "dinkies"; It was almost unheard of here. |

RF 91 |
Description: |
RF 91 was the overnight westbound freight from Pine Aire to Fresh Pond, using the power that had been on RF 63 from Riverhead. Besides doing the road haul, it also worked at Hiucksville and did local switching en route. Tonights train has an MP 15 leading, which occasionally happened if there was not a C 420 ready. Its about 0300, and the train is working the siding east of New Hyde Park on the westbound side, requiring the train to stop in the station while the switch is lined. I took advantage of the stop to get a shot. |

Ringling Bros train |
Description: |
The Ringling Brothers circus usually played the Nassai Coliseum in Uniondale in late November and December. They would run the train out on the Mitchell Field Secondary to access the Coliseum, as it was the closest place to it, and where they could tie up a 60 odd car train. The morning after the circus closed, the train would run west via the Hempstead Branch and Main Line to Long Island City, where Amtrak power would go on, and it would run to Jersey via Penn Station. Here we see it coming around the curve at Floral Park. |

Spraying for contact |
Description: |
The LIRR had a couple of cars specially equipped with tanks of alcohol and spraying equipment to shoot alcohol on the third rail. This reduced the likelihood of ice forming on the third rail, preventing contact, thus making it possible for trains to continue running in snowy weather. Today one of the cars is sandwiched between a pair of MP 15s westbound at New Hyde Park Rd. This must have been a preventive move, as the day is clear. |

The Ronkonkoma electrification project eliminated Pine Aire as a starting point for freights. The new reporting terminal for RF 62 and RF 91 is now Deer Park, with the office being in the old passenger station, seen in the distance at right. The elimination of most diesel trains on the line freed up a bunch of units, and MP 15s are now powering these trains, instead of the C 420s that had been doing the honors for many years prior. A pair of MP 15s is at the new starting point, waiting to go out with RF 62 to Riverhead. |

Delivering the cars |
Description: |
RF 7 rolls up the connecting track from the LIRR to drop cars for Conrail. The tower is the former New Haven Fremont tower, which once controlled a much busier section of railroad here. |

Down the middle |
Description: |
RF 65 rolls down track 2 after coming off the Main Line from Pinelawn. This could be a squeeze of any of the cars were wide enough. It was not uncommon for a faster moving train to bounce off the platforms. Note the PRR style pedestal signal to the right of the train. |

RF 65 |
Description: |
I was knocking around Nassau County, shooting whatever rail activity I found, and went up on the platform at Hicksville. Freights on the Island at the time were a some time thing, and could be really unpredictable, since they were shoehorned between the many commuter trains. So it was pure dumb luck I caught this RF 65 coming in from off the Central Branch with a pair of MP 15s, the power that would lead this train for most of the next 30 years, and a short train. Note the Pennsy influence in the position light pedestal signals at the end of the platforms. |

On the Main Line |
Description: |
RF 65 approaches Hicksville station on the Main Line, coming in from Pinelawn. It will work the yard, just west of the station, then go back out to either the Port Jeff Branch, or to the south shore to work for the day, before repeating the process and returning to Pinelawn later in the day. Hell be tied up before evening rush hits. The position light signal at right gives away the LIRR's Pennsy heritage. |
