Unlikely place for an FA |
Description: |
The LIRR was running diesel trains on its electrified branches following one of the heavy snows that blanketed the region that winter, using typical train sets with a GP 38 up front and an FA in the rear, allowing this rare view of an FA on the Port Washington Branch. |

College town stop |
Description: |
LIRR 611 leads a westbound Oyster Bay train into Greenvale. The sign notes it is the stop for CW Post College, and NY Institute of Technology. CW Post-founded with money from the cereal magnate-was by then part of the Long Island University system. One omission on the sign is the NY Chiropractic College, which was adjacent to CW Post just to the east on NY 25A. |

Mighty mite |
Description: |
The smallest power on the LIRR was two shop switchers that worked at Morris Park. They could be seen spotting power around the shop area, but were hard to come by from the road. Here we see 397 from Atlantic Av in company of some other interesting power. |

Wishful thinking |
Description: |
A pair of FAs is coupled elephant style at the Morris Park shop, probably dreaming of the days when theyd go out like this on heavy freight. Ah, the memories!! Note the coupler on 105. This is one of the Harold protect engines, along with 101. They are fitted with couplers that will mate with the M 1 and M 3 cars, and are stationed at Harold Tower in LI City, to fetch a disabled MU train should it be necessary. The pair would shortly be repainted in a dark gray/orange scheme, a 1960's retro paint job that was quite attractive on them. |

FA 611 leads |
Description: |
An Oyster Bay train with an FA leading pushes up the grade to the Floral Park station. The grade came about as the result of the railiroad lifing the tracks up on a viaduct that took the station and junction above street level in the early 60s. |

Big picture |
Description: |
This westbound led by an FA shows the whole Queens Village station area, as well as the west end of Queens interlocking-Queens tower is behind the third car in the train. The station is largely intact, the ticket office, though is down below off Springfield Blvd. Still, its a good looking structure in 1988. The signals are the west limit of Queens, where trains will go onto either the Main Line, which is the two north tracks;or the Hempstead Branch, the two south tracks. Theyll run alongside each other as far as Floral Park. The tower also controls the wye connection to the Belmont Spur, leading to Belmont Racetrack, which connects from track 4 at far right. |

A different 611 |
Description: |
Long Island used modified Alco FA's to provide train hotel power, and as control cabs. They were typically on the west end of trains, making photography of them leading somewhat problematic on their morning westbound runs. This one is pulling away as the train heads through Nassau interlocking and up the Oyster Bay branch. Of note are two buildings in the background. The first, seen above the second car from the FA, is Nassau tower. The Long Island may have the most active towers of any railroad in America at this point in history. The second notable structure is the ivy covered building immediately behind the FA. It was once a power station for the LIRR electrified lines, which, in addition to the Main Line west, also included third rail to East Williston on the Oyster Bay branch, and on the line that turned south here to reach Garden City and Hempstead. It was once possible to go from Mineola to West Hempstead and Valley Stream by train. |
