RF 7 |
Description: |
The maid of all work on the west end is RF 7, called out of Fresh Pond in the morning, and worked Sunnyside, the Atlantic and Long Beach Branches, and the Main Line as far as Mineola-basically as directed, depending on the needs of the day. Here it is returning from switching a shipper in New Hyde Park with a short train. |

Spraying for contact |
Description: |
The LIRR had a couple of cars specially equipped with tanks of alcohol and spraying equipment to shoot alcohol on the third rail. This reduced the likelihood of ice forming on the third rail, preventing contact, thus making it possible for trains to continue running in snowy weather. Today one of the cars is sandwiched between a pair of MP 15s westbound at New Hyde Park Rd. This must have been a preventive move, as the day is clear. |

New digs |
Description: |
The Ronkonkoma electrification project eliminated Pine Aire as a starting point for freights. The new reporting terminal for RF 62 and RF 91 is now Deer Park, with the office being in the old passenger station, seen in the distance at right. The elimination of most diesel trains on the line freed up a bunch of units, and MP 15s are now powering these trains, instead of the C 420s that had been doing the honors for many years prior. A pair of MP 15s is at the new starting point, waiting to go out with RF 62 to Riverhead. |

Paving season |
Description: |
During the road work season, Prema Asphalt in Holtsville, east of Ronkonkoma on the Main Line, would get trainloads of stone for their paving operations. The trains usually ran on Sunday afternoon, symbolled RF 56. This one is passing Bellerose, moving over from track 4 to track 2 at Queens. |

EL gon |
Description: |
As CR predecessor roads faded into memory, it was nice to find some of their equipment still running around. In ELs case, it was mostly hoppers and boxcars, but sometimes something else would show up. In this case, it was a gondola that I caught on LIRR freight RF 60, here at Richmond Hill in Queens, somewhat worse for wear 13 years after the fall, but still out there. |

Sunday freight |
Description: |
On Sunday Sep 10 1989, LIRR ran a fan trip that allowed fans to ride cabooses. It was well attended, and there were many chasers as well. The LIRR is a busy road, and normal activities went on as they always do. One such was weekend freight RF 60, seen here on the Montauk Branch with a pair of MP 15s. The caboose special would be along shortly. |
