Something for everyone |
Description: |
Dads boat trip took him past 207th St yard, which had quite a variety of cars. In this view, there is an R1/9, R 10, R 42, an IRT car, probably an R 28; and a couple of IRT Low Vs, now in maintenance service. |

The newer cars used on the Market St line had these rooftop air vents along the length of the car. The lumpy appearance gained them the nickname "Almond Joys" since they resembled the popular candy bar. A train of them is at 69th st. |

Wide variety |
Description: |
Dad made a trip to Washington in January 1972, I dont recall why. He took the train down, rather than fly, for all the reasons people take the train. He got this shot looking from the concourse toward the trains shed, where he found Metroliners in Amtrak colors, as well as some still painted PC. Look to the far right-theres an MP 54 up to the bumping post, still in Tuscan red. |

The Metroliner was still a fairly new thing in 1972, having gone into service only about four years earlier. They were popular, now that they had overcome some of the teething problems that come with new technology. A set painted for Amtrak is on the adjacent track. The bright colors would last a decade. |

Im an east coast guy. I have a pretty good idea of the history of most of the eastern systems, and their equipment. The west?? Not much. I recall when BART was opened, almost 50 years ago, and the slant nose cars that ran there. I cant imagine these are the same cars, despite the tendency of rapid transit cars to run seemingly forever. In any case, these look pretty good. |

We went to the west coast in 2015 to see some of the parks, drive up the coast, and see some old friends. A friend of my wife lived in Walnut Creek, in a condo right across the street from BART. Our last day there, as we were getting set up to head out, I took some shots of the local transit operation. A train of Alstom built "C" cars approaches the Walnut Creek station. |

Among other places the ERA trip visited on this excursion, were several yards. Here we are riding through Concourse Yard in the Bronx, home of a wide variety of cars that ran on the CC and D trains. The CC, a maid of all work local that ran from Bedford Park Blvd to Chamber St(It wasn't the World Trade Center yet) was assigned R1/9's and R 10's. The D train, which ran to Coney Island, got R32's and R42's mostly. At the time, the R 42's were some of the newest cars on the system-and the AC mostly worked. |

Back to town |
Description: |
The train we rode to Wheat Ridge returns to the Ward Rd station. Well get back on board, and go back to Union Station. The Front Range is right behind the train. I 70 passes through town here, and quickly starts the ascent into the mountains. |

On the platform |
Description: |
The train is now at the platform, and well board for the trip back to Denver. They make you get off and wait at the station while the train pulls west of the staton for its short layover. A better option is get off at Arvada Old Town, which has shops and restaurants immdeiately adjacent to the station. |

Arrived |
Description: |
We have arrived at Wheat Ridge-Ward Rd on this G train. It will pull west of the station to change ends and return to Denver after a short layover. There is a lot of residential development going on here, as can be seen in the background, but thus far, not much for restaurants, etc, which will likely come later. Arvada Old Town is a better turning point if you want a bite to eat. |

Looks like the South Shore |
Description: |
I had a chance to shoot some of the Denver RTD train while there for some medical consultation in late August and early September. One of the lines I caught was the A line to the airport. This eastbound(to the airport) train was crossing Green Valley Ranch Rd, near where it crosses Pena Blvd. The cars and catenary are strikingly reminiscent of the South Shore. |
