Interior view |
Description: |
The interior of an RTD car. Theyre a fairly basic coach for this era. One nice feature is 110 outlets, which are at each end of the car. These were really useful, as my wife is on a portable oxygen concentrator, a requirement for her at this elevation. We live at around 1200 feet, so the thinner air at a mile high needs a boost. It was really helpful to be able to plug in, and not use up battery time. |

EL 4601 |
Description: |
The Erie Lackawanna lines out of Hoboken were a time warp, although elsewhere in New Jersey not much had changed either. What made the EL trains special was that, except for some of the U34's, almost nothing had been altered from its EL appearance, where on the PC and CNJ lines there was a lot of painting out of predecessor road names. The trains and stations would retain their flavor til NJ Transit updated the DLW lines a few years later and changed the power distribution system, rendering these Edison era trains obsolete. |

Metro North comes for a visit |
Description: |
Much of the testing of new equipment was done at a facility at the Shea Stadium station, and it was not uncommon for trains to take a test run to Great Neck on the Port Washington Branch. Here a set of new Metro North M3A's passes Little Neck. |

R 11 |
Description: |
One of the odder cars the NYCTA had was a set of ten R 11s. These were of aluminum construction, built in 1948 to test how the aluminum bodies and parts would hold up. They didnt do as well as the Transit Authority hoped, and they became orphans. By the time I was riding the trains regularly in the mid 1970s, there were four of them left, running on the Franklin Av Shuttle, from Prospect Park on the Brighton Line, to Fulton St, where it connected to the IND A train on the Fulton St subway. Transfer was by taking a paper ticket from a dispenser, then going to the other line, where you dropped the ticket in a fare box. This lasted til the Franklin Av train was replaced by buses, I think in the late 70s. This car is seen at the Transit Museum in the old IND Court St station in Brooklyn. |

Not quite as old |
Description: |
A train of mid 50s built R 27s aprroaches one of the Rockaway Line stations. This was one of two trains I caught that day. Its not quite as old as the other one, which had R 10s. The line here was once part of the LIRR, reached via two routes. The main route was via a junction with the LIRR Main Line at Rego Park, which ran south through Woodhaven and Howard Beach. It crossed Jamaica Bay on a wood pile trestle, which was a constant maintenance headache. The last straw was a fire in 1950. The LIRR sold it to NYCTA, which rebuilt it as a concrete causeway. The LIRR Rockaway Line was cut back to Woodhaven, and finally abandoned in 1962. The other route is still in service via Valley Stream, though the through route was cut so the LIRR Far Rockaway station is about four blocks from the IND station. |

Low Vs on the dead line |
Description: |
A couple of IRT Low V cars sits at 207th St waiting for the end. These cars had been retired in the mid 60s as the R 33s came on line, and were slowly being cut up here. |

Old subway cars never die |
Description: |
They just labor on in the dark. A BMT D type is coupled to a retired IRT Low V, something you'd never see in regular service, at 57 St on the BMT Broadway Line, waiting for a signal to head downtown to continue their late night maintenance chores. |
