One of the good things about the Cut Off was the grade separation. There were no crossings from Clarks Summit to Halstead. There were a number of overhead bridges, such as this one on PA 706 just south of New Milford, which provided good vantage points for photos. PYRP rolls under behind a we-ain't-mad-at-nobody consist on a gloomy Sunday. |

Interesting power |
Description: |
Despite the dwindling variety of diesels offered by the two remaining builders by 1990, there was still a remarkable variety on NS, and they seemed to run systemwide, and onto connections. The line up at the East Binghamton fuel pad this day bears this out, as we see a GP 59, B32-8, and GP 50, models that were not huge sellers compared to the SD40 types and C30-7s that pervaded most of the big roads rosters at that time. |

Down the Lehigh |
Description: |
H 12, an Elmira based local that works to Sayre, rolls past the home signals at Waverly, taking the Lehigh Secondary toward the ex LV. The trailing unit is for operational flexibility, desirable in this case due to the way the tracks are configured. It will save a couple of run around moves through the course of the day. The GP 50, once the backbone of the high priority fleet on the Southern, has come down a few notches since its glory days of the 1980s. |

Interesting leader |
Description: |
One of the things about the non priority trains was that they got some of the second tier power, i.e. not a GE wide cab, though there were so many of those just about every train had them, including locals. A case in point is this 12T passing under the Campville-Apalachin bridge with a GP 50 leading. These ex Southern units were one time stars, handling hot trains in the Piedmont. |

Different |
Description: |
The D&H, as a condition of the Conrail merger, got access to a number of points in the northeasu to foster some level of competition. One of them was Potomac Yard in Alexandria VA, which served to make connections with Southern, now NS, and Chessie, as well as the RF&P. All those would eventually go into CSX. Power from the connections ran through, so it was not unusual to see CSX and NS component diesels on RPPY and PYRP. We see RPPY heading for Virginia on the ex Reading, with the usual CSX and NS power, among them an ex SCL GP 40. It was a daily event, but decidedly different from the steady diet of blue provided by Conrail. |
