Class unit
Title:  Class unit
Description:  NS had two classes of GP 38s, one in the 2700s, another in the 5000s. This is the class unit of the second set, originally a Southern unit. We see it here on a work train at Brocton NY on the ex Nickel Plate while waiting for NW 611. The signal in the diuance is the east end of Pomfret siding.

Still Southern, mostly
Title:  Still Southern, mostly
Description:  Two years after the NS merger, there was still a lot of predecessor power around. This set was on a train at Danville KY on the Rathole. There's more to it than meets the eye. The leader is obvious, one of the unusual high short hood GP 30's only NW and Southern got; the third unit is ex Central of Georgia and carries its C of G number. The trailing unit is actually at home; it's sublettered for the CNO&TP.

Western visitors
Title:  Western visitors
Description:  13T approaches the NY 17C overpass on a gloomy afternoon, a pair of UP units leading. Of all the trains to come through here, 13T was most likely to have something unusual, especially if BNSF power was involved. I saw this train show up behind Santa Fe warbonnets, as well as ex BN Grinstein SD 70MACs.

Lite power
Title:  Lite power
Description:  A set of lite power rolls through AF on its way south with a relatively rare bird leading-a hi hood GE. Southern and NW got them, just as they did with everything else. But overall, there were a lot fewer GE's than EMD's built this way.

Interesting leader
Title:  Interesting leader
Description:  One of the things about the non priority trains was that they got some of the second tier power, i.e. not a GE wide cab, though there were so many of those just about every train had them, including locals. A case in point is this 12T passing under the Campville-Apalachin bridge with a GP 50 leading. These ex Southern units were one time stars, handling hot trains in the Piedmont.

H88 unusual leader
Title:  H88 unusual leader
Description:  H 88 usually got the standard set of widecabs, but sometimes would run a spell where it got an interesting mix of power. On one of those days, we see a GP 59 an ex NW GP 38AC, and an ex Southern GP 38-2 leading 65 cars at Endicott.

Cresting the grade
Title:  Cresting the grade
Description:  40T, today with a pair of NS units, an unusual circumstance for this train, crests the short, steep pull south of Hallstead. The DLW once had a "low grade" here that freights used. The 24 cars on todays train will not tax the power much, though bigger trains really work here.

Yard and road power
Title:  Yard and road power
Description:  D&H 5017 works a cut of cars as todays prize, the power for RPPY, sits next to the tower. I got lucky today-RPPY went south shortly after this was taken, and I was able to chase to Scranton. Another piece of vanished railroading is in this photo: the D&H box car next to 5017.

Description:  I know there are many parts of Southerns empire where snow is not all that unusual, but I have to love the idea of power from such a typically warm area running up in the snow and cold of NY and PA. This RPPY has just left East Binghamton, and is slowly making its way through Conklin.

Description:  RPPY has just left East Binghamton, and is passing BLS Shaws. By this time, trains have usually cleared the south limit of the yard. There is still a slow slog to the end of the double track south of Conklin, as there is a 10 MPH speed restriction in place. Its a drag for the crews, but a great opportunity for photographers.

Deadlined
Title:  Deadlined
Description:  In poking my way around Chattanooga, I found myself looking at the dead line in Debutts Yard late in the afternoon. It was kind of strange seeing power I thought of as "new" already heading to rebuild, or the torch, including these SD 70M-2s, that seemed to have had a short life on NS. Several did find their way to the NYSW.

12T
Title:  12T
Description:  12T usually got whatever power was handy at Allentown, and you never knew what to expect. One of the more mundane, in the sense of unit models, but unusual sets rolls west with 119 cars. That's a long train for a relatively low horsepower consist-only 5000 HP, when you consider all the trains I've seen over the years with 40 cars and 12000 HP.

12T on the DL side
Title:  12T on the DL side
Description:  A short(17 car) train 12T behind among other things, a pair of ex CR units, waits for a crew at Binghamton late in the day. This photo gives a good overview of the changes that have taken place in the DL&W station area over the years, and some things that have not changed as well. The train sits on the Johnson Running track, once track 1 on the DLW main, and designated Track 3 by EL. To the right, track DL4, once EL track 4 and originally DLWs eastbound main track 2, now is lifted over the Chenango River. West of the Susquehanna, the line is a walking trail through Vestal, and forms most of the right of way for NY 17 west to Elmira. At lower right, the station platforms are still in place, though deteriorating. The shed over the set out tracks is also still in place, though those tracks, which once served to hold set out sleepers and mail/express, and in later years equipment owned by the Susquehanna Valley RHS, are now "land locked", the switches to the main tracks removed during the construction of the baseball stadium, which is seen at right of the train. The stadium where the AA Binghamton Mets play, is on the site of the DLW freight house, and saw its first game in April 1992. To the right of the set out tracks is the stack for the station power house. The power house sits to the left of the stack, partly obscured by foliage. Partly visible at the right edge of the photo is a steel tower that was one of the original Marconi installations, now an engineering landmark. To the left of the train, the brick building and vehicles beyond it sit on the site of the Erie freighthouse, torn down several years earlier.

Wisconsin Central leads the way
Title:  Wisconsin Central leads the way
Description:  12T and 13T were the two trains that tended to get the unusual power. 40T and 41T commonly got CN power, and sometimes IC, rarely GT power, though on a couple of occasions a DWP unit showed, but it was generally all in the CN family. But the Allentown trains could be a treat, getting anything from a run of the mill set of wide cab GEs to ex Santa Fe warbonnets and UP flags, which were still something of a big deal then. Todays 12T is a winner, a pair of WC SD 45s leading an ex MPI lease unit now part of the Helm fleet, and an NS 4 motor, in bright sun with a deep mantle of snow. We see the train approaching the 45 MPH curve at MP 220, as it makes its way toward Owego.

Description:  The two jobs that will interchange with the Owego & Harford met at Owego. We see D 22, the Mills Job, coming toward us with a commonplace set of GP 9us. It is meeting NS local H2A(they pick those symbols out of a hat, really) with GP 38 rebuild 5577 on the east end. Between the two trains are a total of five cars.

Local in the snow
Title:  Local in the snow
Description:  A former CR GP15 and a GP 38 have 4 cars of local H2A(I swear, NS picks their symbols out of a hat!!) under control at Owego. The train is based in Elmira, and works as far east as Owego, much as CR's WEEL39 did in years past. They will be switching the Ward & Van Scoy mill, whose tower is seen behind the train.

You know where you are
Title:  You know where you are
Description:  H2A is in the siding, which acts like a running track, at MP 236, just east of the Owego station. They are working the Ward & Van Scoy grain mill, and will soon head west after meeting 41T and CPs D 22.

Once there were two
Title:  Once there were two
Description:  H2A rolls toward Ayers Rd in Tioga Center. Once there were two railroads here, the EL and the LV. The Lehigh was pulled up almost immediately at Conrail startup, leaving just the EL line, on which the train is running. The LV right of way is where the car is parked.
