NS shows
Title:  NS shows
Description:  NS ran two merchandise trains to CN at Montreal, 31T north and 30T south. This is 30T rolling through BX on its way to East Binghamton, where it will get a new crew to take it on to Enola. It could show any time, though afternoons were common. Sometimes if NS didnt have a rested crew, it would get stowed on track 4 at Binghamton til one was ready. Today's power is notable in that the leader is an ex CR SD 70 that was slated to go to NS when it was purchased. The second unit is one of the NW low nose SD40-2's acquired in the late 70's, and anomaly for NW, which had always specified high short hoods and long hood forward operation.

Rolling hard
Title:  Rolling hard
Description:  Actually, this is one of the slower parts of the Transcon across the Texas panhandle. There is a hilly segment near Canadian, where the line crosses the Canadian River and its valley, making for some hard pulls. This 89 platform eastbound looks like it will make the grade.

Description:  13T approaches Endicott, seen through the overgrowth near the NY 17C overpass. Todays leader is a BNSF GE, with four NS units, to make sure they make Allentown with their 31 cars. This train was usually a good bet for something unusual.

Undecorated
Title:  Undecorated
Description:  Athearn didn't know what they were starting when they offered their locomotive models unpainted as well as in typical road names. The prototype railroads got in on the act too. Here in a scene where life imitates art, a new NS SD70M-2 in primer leads 412 south out of Binghamton. It will get painted at either Altoona or Chattanooga as it comes in for service.

Local power
Title:  Local power
Description:  Where Conrail always used 4 motor units for its WABH11 local, NS used 6 axle units on the counterpart to that train, H 01. Typically that would be a GE, but sometimes it was other power. This weeks choice is a standard cab SD70, seen along Court St at BD.

205 west
Title:  205 west
Description:  205 is about to pass under the US 220 bridge at the west end of Waverly. This shot gives a view of how things changed there in the previous decade. The train is on the original #1 track. The roadbed for track 2 is visible as the overgrown section to the right of the train, then as a tail track for the Leprino Foods siding. Part of their former siding is seen in the bushes to the far right. The red building at far left is approximately the site of the Erie station, which was demolished by a 1967 derailment. The connection to the ex Lehigh Valley is about where the overpass is in the distance.

Big power for a local
Title:  Big power for a local
Description:  NS train H 02 heads down the Vestal Spur, once the DLW main line, through Johnson City NY en route to service National Pipe & Plastic across the river in Vestal. This is much larger power than Conrail used on this line, as they restricted it to 4 axle units, and even with coal for Goudy, just to the west of this location, typically used one unit.

Southbound empty coal
Title:  Southbound empty coal
Description:  From time to time, NS would send coal to the D&H via Harrisburg. On CP these would be symbolled 8858 north and 8859 south, with varying symbols on NS, though Ive seen 87T and 88T used. Here we see one of the 8859 trains crossing "baby Tunkhannock" more properly known as Martins Creek Viaduct south of Kingsley PA, with a pair of UP leaders.

Coal, but not for here
Title:  Coal, but not for here
Description:  A northbound coal train rolls past the old Jennison Station at Bainbridge. This power plant was an on and off D&H customer, getting most of its coal by truck. If I recall, it was closed by this date in 2001, after NYSEG sold its generating capacity(another NY State inspired boondoggle), and older, less efficient plants were shut down. This train will go to the B&M at Mohawk, and eventually on to Massachusetts.

Unusual power
Title:  Unusual power
Description:  Its typical to see the home road power on its own trains, but on this train, 41T, thats more of an anomaly than common occurrence. 41T is a run through with CN that almost always gets CN power. The southbound edition, 40T, must have gotten into Enola too late to turn the power for 41T, or there was another problem somewhere, resulting in a set of NS power on the train today, seen at QD yard for a crew change. An added surprise is the CR painted straight SD 70.

Description:  The full set of power on todays 41T, an uncommon all NS consist. More unusual is the CR straight SD 70 that trails. Those units were bought with the CR split in mind, and numbered into the NS numbering plan, hence no "patch" on the numbers, making for a pure looking unit.

Description:  12T rolls through Endwell as seen from Watson Blvd across the pond. NS was taking delivery of new GEs from Erie in primer at the time, and painting them at Altoona or Chattanooga as they reached those shops. The result was many of them ran "undecorated" for a while til they got to a paint booth. One trails on this train.
