Waiting to get in
Title:  Waiting to get in
Description:  Lack of yard space sometimes made it necessary for trains to be parked outside the yard. This BFOA is on Conrail track 3 waiting for space in the yard. A yard crew will come out and get it when theres room. NS power was typical.

OIBU in the gloom
Title:  OIBU in the gloom
Description:  Heavy overcast is not unusual in the Tier, but the trains run anyway, so I was out shooting pictures. Today OIBU has a pair of NS units trailing its GP 40, showing that NYSW doesnt have a monopoly on the Thoroughbreds. The ex Erie freighthouse is peeking out from under the Chenango St overpass.

Description:  Virginian had a line that went to Deepwater, on the Kanawha River, to interchange wtih the NYC. During a trip to chase C&O 614 in January of 1985, I lucked onto this run on the line. It was around 0730, really too early for much light there, but I took the shots I could.

Interesting stuff
Title:  Interesting stuff
Description:  An overview of QD yard shows a few interesting items. In the foreground is a set of power that came off a Goudy coal train. A trio of UP units, no stranger to coal service out west, are not that common here. Behind them is an NS SD40-2, one of the early ones that had been an NW unit originally. In the background, thats not a P&W unit. NYSW acquired some ex P&W units as part of their lease fleet. Most of them wound up working on the NYSW for a time, including this one, presently dozing away the afternoon. The NYSW proper also is showing the flag, as a yellowjacket from BH 2 comes around the corner from Bevier St, seen under the bridge in the distance.

PYRP arrives
Title:  PYRP arrives
Description:  PYRP crosses Terrace Drive and enters the East Binghamton yard. Power is typical, but today we have something different, rebuilt GP 38-2 7312, just in from M-K in Mountain Top PA. Note the railfan chase vehicle in the foreground. This was a Canadian built Chevy Celebrity for the Canadian market-the speed read in kilometers per hour, and the odometer counted kilometers. It took some adjusting to figure out how far and fast you were going. I got pretty good at multiplying everything by 5/8ths.

Title:  Classic power

A trio of 40s
Title:  A trio of 40s
Description:  From odd places. The leader is an ex Southern SD 40-2, still at it after all these years, and still with the high short hood that was the hallmark of Southern, and merger partner NW. The UP units were a surprise, since by this time, bigger power was standard, and many of the 40 line units were on locals or yard duty. But, 12T was an unusual train, and anything could show up.

Grab shot
Title:  Grab shot
Description:  My wife doesnt believe I get these. We were driving through Decatur AL on the way home from Georgia last weekend when I pulled up to a light on US72A. There was a crossing between me and the intersection. I looked over, expecting empty track on a Sunday afternoon. To my surprise, there was a train there. I took advantage of the slow speed to roll over the crossing, holding the camera up. I tripped the shutter as we went over the crossing, with this result. A pair of SDs are holding north of the crossing on an industrial track leading to the Nucor steel plant.

Taking it to the street
Title:  Taking it to the street
Description:  One of the more interesting parts of the NS former Nickel Plate line was this stretch of 19th St in Erie, where the tracks ran down the middle. Im sure the residents made their peace with it, but I can imagine having a train in your front yard several times per day must have been a pest at times. Here we see HAN 1X taking a slow stroll through town with 30 platforms and 15 COFC. It would not be til 2002 that the locals would get some relief, when a connection was built to the CSX former NYC line on either end of the street running. That "89" at left is the milepost(from Buffalo), and not a house number.
