Title:  Lucky catch
Description:  Immediately beyond this grade crossing was an intersection. I looked up and down the track before crossing, as I was pulling a 53 foot trailer and would not clear it if I pulled up to the light. To the north was a signal, which was green. Since most signals are approach lit, I figured there was likely a train coming, so I held back. Good thing. This showed up before the light changed.

Union Station
Title:  Union Station
Description:  The NYC station at Utica was really a union station, in that it was also used by the DLW, which came up Schuyler St through town. That part of the operation is still run by the NYSW, serving, among others, Matts Brewing Co. The last DLW train here was in the 1950s. The station is still used by Amtrak, and its a good place to see CSX action as well, such as this 91 car eastbound.

Description:  Ex Conrail units were getting to be unusual by this time, so it was nice to get one in the lead, and a rare one at that: this is one of only 10 C30-7's on the CR roster. All their other C30's were C30-7A, a 12 cylinder version that put out the same horsepower. The trailing unit here is also ex CR, now repainted for CSX.

Description:  Conrail leading arm LMS had a group of C40-8s that it shared with CN, but which were painted CR blue. One of them has made it onto CSX, and is leading this 84 car auto rack train west. Note also the second unit, a GP 15-1. This is one of the units CSX got in the Conrail split-CR had 100 of them, new in 1979. Chessie acquired 25 of its own, a turbocharged variation called a GP15T-1, in 1982.
