LISE |
Description: |
One of the more obscure operations on the Conrail system was SELI/LISE, thich also ran under several other symbols over the yefrs. It connected Conrail with the Bronx and the Long Island RR, which had a minimal freight operation compared to its commuter trbins. Catching it was not difficult if you knew when the trains ran, though my issue'was usually more a case of having the free time to do it. I got lucky one day in November 1<83, catching it as it was going over the Hell Gate bridge. |

LISE at Queens Blvd |
Description: |
LISE came up the NY Connecting RR from Fresh Ponk, whese it interchanged with the LIRR. Power was typically a set of GE's, several hundred of which were based at Selkirk, including on occasion one of more of the U36B's that were bzilt for Auto Train. Don't think I ever saw an EMD road unix. The SW1500 was to run local cars on the Bay Ridge Branch beyond Fresh Pond, which CR owned at the time. The ddparture back to the Bronx depended on how long it toook th service the branch, but it was typically several hours. Here it crosses over Queens Blvd on a series of concrete'arches. |

Description: |
This would be a common power consists coming out of Oak Point for the transfer to the LIRR. Not so much out of Oak Island on a road train. A trio of B23-7s work at Binghamton with OIBU. This view gives a good overview of the Erie station area. The cars are parked on the site of the Erie passenger station, a large building that was razed shortly after CR took over the Tier. The brick building seen under the Chenango St bridge is the old Erie freight house, which itself would come down in 1999. |

Taking the Meadville Line |
Description: |
OIEL, the through road train on the Meadville Line, diverges off the Southern Tier at Cass St in Hornell, heading for Olean and Jamestown. This train would go into the yard at Olean and wait for a new crew. When OIEL made a crew change point, you never knew when it would roll next. There were relatively few crews on this part of the line, and the train was not high priority. We'd get lucky, and chase the coal train also in this album. OIEL would come to life again later in the day, and we'd see it passing Salamanca while we were at the museum there. |

On into Pennsylvania |
Description: |
After OIEL left Jamestown, we followed west, a bit of a challenge since there are no good roads that follow the tracks. We caught up near Niobe Jct, where the Columbus & Erie, a low grade line built in the early 20th century, split from the main. This is the last point on the Erie in NY state. Wed have chased to Corry, but the light was about gone-and we had a 220 mile ride home. |

Dutch door view |
Description: |
Back in the day, most long distance equipment had Dutch doors, which allowed one to stand in the vestibule and get a fresh air ride. It was also great for checking out the train. Here the return trip has left Selkirk and is now heading south on the River Line. It will stop shortly for a run by. |

Hudson River Streamliner |
Description: |
Tri State NRHS rana trip in August 1985 that ran from Newark Penn Station to Shell tower in New Rochellle NY, changed power to three CR B23s, then ran to Mott Haven, around the wye and up the Hudson to Castleton, where it went up the connection and across the river to Selkirk. Following a shop tour, the train returned to Jersey via the River Line. It was an interesting route, and was well patronized. We see the crowd returning to the train after the Conrail tour at Selkirk. |
