Description:  As the 1990s wore on, even though most of the dedicated stack trains went to the ex NYC via Syracuse, there was still some priority traffic on the Tier. One such train was TV 20, seen here rolling toward the NY 17C overpass with 82 stack platforms and 26 COFC.

OIBU in the late afternoon
Title:  OIBU in the late afternoon
Description:  OIBU was a pretty reliable afternoon train at Binghamton, which made for some great lighting, such as on todays train, working QD yard. The steel structire at right is a Marconi tower. The Lackawanna RR was an early experimenter with radio communication, and had erected the tower to transmit from the station to trains in 1913. There is a NY State historical marker to note its significance.

Great view
Title:  Great view
Description:  One of the more panoramic views of the Tier, but a hard one to get, since you could only get this shot sunlit late in the day in the summer, and there was no place convenient to park, was this shot of the line from the hill on Watson Blvd as it approached Endwell. When it worked, it was a great shot. Here it is with OIBU rolling west with 41 cars on a Friday bfternoon.

Description:  ML 401 was the train that ran mostly empty auto racks from Doremus Av unloading facility in Newark to Buffalo!via the Tier. Today it has 44 general freight ahead of its 48 racks, so either the merchandise was really light and they combined it with OIBU, or it was really heavy and this was overflow. We see it at Waverly passing the iconic Ted Clarks Busy Market, which was still there when I visited this past July.

Description:  No, not the Disney feature!! In this case, iws the Chemung River, which we see at left from the connector bridge at Wellsburg in this view of ML 401 approaching the automatic signal 266-1. In another month, the weather will warm up enough to cause a!lot of snow melt, which will put the river at the bottom of this bridge, helping create a massive ice dam.

Description:  An empty XWB coal train from the NYSEG plant in Ithaca has reached block limit station WAVE(at right, small blue sign) and is now entering the Southern Tier Line. The train is being handled by a Gang Mills crew, and is symbolled WACG 30; the train will eventually go back to a mine in southwestern PA near Brownsville.

Description:  One of the hottest trains on the system was TVLA, a through connection to Santa Fe that became their 198 train to Los Angeles. Together, CR and ATSF combined for a transit of apporximately 76 hours coast to coast. This one is a big train, 91 trailer flats for the Santa Fe. Check out the Saab in the parking lot.

Slowly through town
Title:  Slowly through town
Description:  WAIT 2 rolls south past the Food King parking lot, adhering to the 10 MPH speed limit through downtown, pulling a line of salt cars from the Cargill mine up on Cayuga Lake. Of note is the trailing unit, one of CR's ten C32-8's. These were a Conrail only model, and spent most of their time on the Boston and River Lines, and rarely strayed. Finding this one in Ithaca was a real catch.

Pulling

Description:  OIBU has gotten back on his train and is now starting to pull its 50 cars west. We have here a good view of the station area. The concrete pad behind the lead unit is the location of thg Erie station. Under the middle of the overpass is the Erie freight house, the red brick building. It will be torn down in 1999. In the right background, we see the station tower on the DLW station, as well as the hteel frame of the Marconi tower, which was used to mount an antenna for an early radio application. To the left of the radio tower, we see the smokestack for the station powerhouse, which not only provided heat for the station, but also for the steam lUnes that heated the set out cars that were dropped or picked up here.
