Lucky catch |
Description: |
I was taking recyclables up to the transfer station, which means I need to cross the KCS at Lincoln Av. I looked down the track to see a pair of lights. Its Saturday, not likely to be a track car out. A moment later, the top light of the three popped out from under the Cheri Whitlock Dr overpass. I swung around into the empty lot at Tahlequah St for this last light shot of a 125 car TXUX coal train headed for Texas, where they could use the power right now. That white stuff on the ground?? Snow. We had about 10 over the last week, though today the temperature is in the mid 40's, and a lot of it has melted. |

Through the trees |
Description: |
Recent rains-some places got over 3"-had swollen a number of local watercourses. In this case, Butler Creek had surged, washing out some of the trees and debris that cluttered the stream bank. Most of the trees on the one side remained, though there was enough clear to get a shot of the DPU on this northbound coal train under the bluffs. |

Empty coal |
Description: |
Sometimes I can hear trains all the way from Watts, though usually not til they get closer to me in Siloam Springs. I heard what sounded like a northbound climbing the hill, but a quick ride around town yielded no train. I headed up to Davidson Rd to see what was going on, and found a southbound oil train on the crossing. I made a quick turn, and beat it for Watts. The oil train had gone through, no surprise there, but had met this coal train there. I caught it on the Illinois River bridge in cruddy light. Still a pretty shot, though. |

Out of the sun |
Description: |
There is a small pull off with a historical marker along US 60 at Silio, where I stopped for a brief break. While there, an eastbound appeared out of the sinking sun with three units and 180 or so cars silhouetted against the landscape, which was now starting to show the mountainous terrain after miles of open plains. I'd spend til Monday morning with friends in Belen, then start my return. Photos from the two days in Belen are in the Two Mornings at Belen album. |

Cleaned up |
Description: |
I liked the shot here, because there was an old switch stand, and the remnants of an old customer siding here, that gave the shot some railroad feel. KCS has been doing some work on the line. The old siding and its switch stand are now gone. I have not been up here in a couple of months, but Im guessing they did this some time in the past 60 days or so. They have also removed the switches from the non controlled siding at Siloam Springs, which I dont understand, since it was used often to drop cuts of grain cars til they were needed. |

DPUs on the move |
Description: |
The DPUs from both trains meet just north of the Ark 12 overpass. The empty trains a lot of times get only one unit, and sometimes dont get any, with all the power up front. The current practice on loaded trains is to run them 2x3 on the Heavener Sub, so we have a pair of KCS units tacked on behind the BNSF DPU that came from Wyoming. |

Round the curve |
Description: |
I caught up with the coal train just south of the yard office, getting this shot of it coming around the sweeping curve at MP 237, the second unit, a Grinstein SD 70, now in view. Id see two of these now hard to find units today(actually three, the second coal train had one that had been repainted.) |
