Holding, dark side |
Description: |
The coal train was to hold for a northbound, which was going to be a while, since the previous southbound was probably not yet to Stilwell, the next possible meet point. I got this shot of it from the shoulder of US 59, getting the nose in sun, the rest of the train in a dark side contrast as it waited at CP South Watts. Note the switch lined for the siding. The northbound will likely work here, accessing the yard from the siding. |

Looking down the old siding |
Description: |
I was again out giving the fresh water tank a good slosh-see the shot from the previous day-and again got a flashing yellow when I hit the crossing at Davidson Rd. I turned a little more quickly, and was able to get down to Jefferson St. Were looking down the siding that until maybe the first of July was used for stowing covered hoppers en route to other destinations. Now the switches have been removed at both ends. This was a frequently used piece of track. Dont know why it was taken out of service. |

Roadside meet |
Description: |
I was good at finding roads that followed the tracks; sometimes it paid off. One such was MO 171 north of Joplin, which followed the KCS for a short distance between there and the Kansas line. There was a siding there, at which I caught a meet of a southbound intermodal and an empty coal train. |

13T meets Grinstein |
Description: |
13T waits for a recrew at QD behind a pair of BNSF Grinstein green SD70s. They were not typically seen off coal trains, never mind on the east coast, so this was a treat. As usual, clouds ruled the day. In a twist of irony, I would see this unit again in 15 years, freshly repainted in the BNSF "Swoosh" scheme, as the DPU on an empty Texas Gulf Utilities train at Gravette Ark, on the KCS. |

Old switch stand |
Description: |
A relatively recent repaint-of a 20 plus year old unit-passes a relic of the past, a switch stand that once controlled a switch for a local business. In a quirk of fate, this was a second meeting for me with this engine. I had shot it back in March of 2005, leading NS 13T at Binghamton NY. It was in Grinstein Green in those days. Look for it in the NS in the Southern Tier album. |

Bright future |
Description: |
The trailing unit is one of the 1000 SD70MACs BN acquired in the 90s for coal service. Many of them have now been displaced in that work by newer power, and have found their way into the general freight pool. This last unit is still(mostly) in its original paint, but the second unit, another Grinstein, is now in "Swoosh" paint. Hopefully this is a bodes well for its future!! |

After I shot the head end at the station, I went up to the US 59 overpass just to the south. The shot is not as open as I remember it, but now that Ive lived here 15 years, Im finding that there are a lot of places that were good shots, that are now overgrown, especially in late summer. I still managed a shot of the DPU going away, an unusual mix of power. |

Close but no cigar |
Description: |
As the famous TRP page goes. In this case, on a couple of fronts. First, I didnt get a clean shot of the engine. I typically shoot every unit in a consist, especially if its more than about three units, since I wont recall every diesel to log it later. I tend to blast quickly, just so I get the numbers, and dont pay much attention to the framing, etc, since these almost never make it to the web. The other close call is the engine number. The leader was CP 9780; this us BNSF 9783. Three numbers lower, Id have had the same engine number on consecutive units. What a hoot that would have been!! |

Going downhill |
Description: |
The GEMX train rolls past the waiting empty AEPX train as it makes for the grade into the Illinois River valley and Watts. Thats the US 412 overpass ahead of the train, a some time platform for my photos. |

Waiting |
Description: |
Trains spend a lot of time waiting. This one is north of Country Club Rd, where there is enough track space to fit a 125 car coal train between here and the next crossing north, Davidson Rd. The KCS is pretty good about not blocking crossings in town any longer than needed for a meet. There was a northbound empty AEPX train on the way up from Watts-slowly. This southbound was here about 20 minutes before he moved. |

Good mix |
Description: |
The DPU on this southbound TXUX train is a mix of attractive units, a BN Grinstein SD 70, and a KCS Belle, presently the best looking paint scheme in America. |

Almost a DPU |
Description: |
I must have not been paying attention, as the DPU caught me off guard, and it was a good one, a BNSF Grinstein SD 70. I cut the nose off, but you get the idea. |

Catching up |
Description: |
Wed gone to breakfast in Gentry, then over to OReilly to get yet another headlight, and visit with my son, who is tie manager of that store. As we were parting, we saw a train pull up into the siding. In short order, the dodger went south, and the chase was on. We caught theÝGPU south of Decatur, getting this grab shot from the car. |

Going away |
Description: |
Not the first time Ive shot this unit, its one of two rolling away at Wolf Creek. Its mate is a Grinstein SD 70, always a good thing to see. There are some who dont especially like that scheme. Ive always thought it was elegant. |
