By the barn #2
Title:  By the barn #2
Description:  I waited on the coal train, now taking a position up on the old US 59 alignment, now a local road. It gave me a more panoramic view of the area than the shot from the new US 59 shoulder. The pair of EMDs has 123 cars of Texas bound coal in hand, passing the familiar hay bales.

Getting grown over
Title:  Getting grown over
Description:  Its been almost ten years since ODOT widened US 59 here to four lanes. As part of that project, there was a lot of brush clearing. Now, a bit of it has grown back in, and its beginning to obscure what for a few years was a clear shot of a nice S curve. The 262 rolls through, the power now partly hidden.

And were off
Title:  And were off
Description:  The 181 cleared the south end of Watts, and the 262 got underway, seen here getting a roll on as it comes around the corner at MP 237. I figured I could chase him to Westville, seven miles south, then get back for the coal train, which still had to move into the siding at 15 MPH, then get to the south end, and back onto the main at 15 MPH. That proved to be a viable approach, and I was able to get some shots of the 262, which has an attractive power set.

A gray and a Belle
Title:  A gray and a Belle
Description:  Now that the Belle scheme has been in use for almost 20 years, I always like to see one in the lead, especially since it looks so much nicer than the gray. I should appreciate the gray diesels more, since there are now so few of them. The SD 70MACs got all repainted, and most are now off the roster; the first order of SD70ACe's is also repainted, as finally are the AC44's. About the only group not painted Belle now are some of the KCSM older GEs, one of which is leading the 181 here at Ballard Creek.

Here it comes
Title:  Here it comes
Description:  I started south to see if I could intercept the 181 as it came up from Westville. I didnt get far. He was passing the detector at MP 238 when I came around the curve. A quick U turn, and I was able to get this tele shot as he came up the tangent. Long train today; 61 stack platforms, 21 auto racks, and 10 articulated racks.

Why the coal train is still at the siding switch
Title:  Why the coal train is still at the siding switch
Description:  ....for the 262 I saw on the way to breakfast, which is ahead of him in the siding. The 181 will pull up on the main, the 262 will go, and the coal train will follow the 262 through the siding. All in a days work for a busy dispatcher.

Off the bridge
Title:  Off the bridge
Description:  I am not usually able to catch a southbound at Watts due to the traffic in Siloam Springs; just too much of it, and a bunch of lights, to beat a train. So there had to be something going on that I was able to beat this train here. Not complaining, its a good shot from the shoulder of US 59

Later that day
Title:  Later that day
Description:  Later on that afternoon, I heard a horn, which turned out to be this 114 car empty northbound TXUX train, seen approaching Tahlequah St. KCS was obviously using the move to shuttle lite power north, judging by the nine units.

Taking the siding
Title:  Taking the siding
Description:  We were headed up to Gentry for breakfast. When we got to the Lincoln St crossing, there was a southbound approaching, which turned out to be the 262 train, here taking the siding for a northbound that we didnt wait for, The tele view brings in the Cobb mill, a mile or so to the north, just beyond Country Club Rd. This would not be the only encounter with this train today.

262 redux
Title:  262 redux
Description:  The 262 I saw on the way to breakfast got to Watts and then canned. It later got a recrew, and rolled on south, ahead of a coal train. Here it is seen from the US 59 shoulder as it approaches Westville. Interestingly, the DPU on this train was consecutive to the trailing unit, CP 8612. Go figure.

Big curve
Title:  Big curve
Description:  We passed up the shot at Cave Springs, recalling that the road there was mostly snow covered the day before, and I wanted to get this shot at Bunch. Turned out the road was in much better shape, and we might have been able to do the tangent shot at Cave Springs and get this spot, too, but not taking chances, given a redo of the previous days chance.

Description:  Sunday of that weekend dawned chilly, but with promise to get into the 40s again. The roads had dried out a bit since the day before, but still a lot of snow cover elsewhere. Coal on the water
Title:  Coal on the water
Description:  We had come down from Gentry, crossing the tracks at Davidson Rd. The signal there showed approach, indicating a southbound on the way. I dropped my wife off at home, and beat it for Watts, getting there just as the dodger was arriving at the north end of the yard. I went to the south end, hoping to catch him working there, where the light would come around for a lit shot. As I reached the south end, here comes this northbound empty AEPX train around the curve. I flipped a U turn and gavew chase, getting ahead of him for this shot on the Illinois River.
