Cargill cars
Title:  Cargill cars
Description:  There were two customers on the Ithaca Branch north of the city: NYSEG at Milliken, which got three trains of coal every week, and Cargill, which had a salt mine just up the lake from Ithaca. Their freight was seasonal, with a surge from late fall into the winter. They were active all year, though, and the WAIT 2 crew has come back to Ithaca yard with a cut of loaded salt hoppers that will eventually be forwarded on to Gang Mills.

Street running
Title:  Street running
Description:  Almost. The right of way was actually separated by a concrete curb. We see WAIT 2 working through town with one car for Cargill, much to the relief of local drivers, who are used to seeing 90 car coal trains go past at 10 MPH. This train will likely return with several dozen salt cars, a typical move.

Scenic LV
Title:  Scenic LV
Description:  The LV stayed pretty much intact east of Sayre PA, though between there and Allentown there was not much traffic after Conrail started. West of there, much of the railroad was pulled up, except for a few sections here and there. Probably the most important was what became the Ithaca Branch under Conrail, the line from Sayre up through Van Etten Jct, then on to ithaca. It served a NYSEG generating station at Milliken, and an adjacent Cargill salt mine, as well as some local customers in Ithaca. Sometimes cars for the uplake customers would be combined, which is what we see here. WAIT 2 rolls north with a salt block head out, with about 90 coal hoppers behind. It will tie up traffic in Ithaca for 20 minutes when it rolls through town.

Last of the Lehigh
Title:  Last of the Lehigh
Description:  The LV west of Van Etten Jct was abandoned almost wholesale shortly after CR start up-just too many routes to Buffalo-and really, the line west of Allentown was largely a ghost line, with just a few locals at Coxton, and one train each way daily covering what remained of the line as far as Sayre. One segment west of Sayre that stayed active was the line to Ithaca, which hosted several coal trains each week to the NYSEG generating station at Ludlowville, and to a Cargill salt mine. The salt was occasionally combined with the coal, but often not, and ran as WAIT2 west of Sayre. Here we see the WAIT2 near Van Etten, en route to the Cargill mine.

Down the Lehigh
Title:  Down the Lehigh
Description:  This going away shot of CGAL shows it on the connection from the ex EL Southern Tier Line(in the foreground) to the Lehigh Line. The steel bridge it is about to cross is NY 17. The train will be in Sayre PA on the ex LV in a few minutes. It will work the yard there, picking up and setting out for RELCO, a contract freight car rebuilder working out of the ex LV shop, and for local WAIT 2, which works the Ithaca Branch, the remaining portion of the LV Main and Passenger Main to Ithaca via Van Etten Jct. Despite an easy connection here, the EL and LV did not interchange at this location as a rule, and this was used mostly for detour moves prior to Conrail. Also note: see the comment below regarding the Elmira, Cortland & Northern, an LV component whose isolated track in Elmira was reached via trackage rights over the Erie/EL via this connection.

Going downtown
Title:  Going downtown
Description:  The ex LV in Ithaca has several blocks of street side running. Its limited to 10 MPH, and caused real havoc with traffic, especially at rush hours. This empty train came through just at dusk, tying up town for 15 minutes. In the late 1990s, a new bridge/interchange for NY 79, 89, and 96 was built, crossing the tracks and largely eliminating the problem.

Tying up town
Title:  Tying up town
Description:  The primary reason for the existence of Conrails Ithaca Branch was the NYSEG plant at Milliken, and Cargill Salt, both of which were north of town along Cayuga Lake. When they went to either of these customers, they had some streetside running to get through town. The coal trains would run about 90 cars, and often there would be a pick up at Cargill that added another 30 cars or so. It really tied things up when a train came. An overpass has been built since this photo, really improving the access when a train is in town.

Streetside
Title:  Streetside
Description:  The Ithaca Branch runs along a city street to get through town from the yard to the line up to Ludlowville, where the Cargill salt mine and NYSEG plant are located. It makes for some interesting traffic. Not too bad here, though this guy wanted to get across pretty badly-a close call, even at 10 MPH-but the main streets get really tied up. WAIT 2 rolls south in the late afternoon, and a traffic mess is a sure thing.

Slowly through town
Title:  Slowly through town
Description:  WAIT 2 rolls south past the Food King parking lot, adhering to the 10 MPH speed limit through downtown, pulling a line of salt cars from the Cargill mine up on Cayuga Lake. Of note is the trailing unit, one of CR's ten C32-8's. These were a Conrail only model, and spent most of their time on the Boston and River Lines, and rarely strayed. Finding this one in Ithaca was a real catch.

Bet he makes the light
Title:  Bet he makes the light
Description:  The ex LV line in Ithaca has a stretch of street side running through town. As in most places where this occurs, the traffic lights are set so that when crossing protection is activated, they set up to prevent vehicles from turning onto or crossing the tracks. The trains, however, make all the lights, no matter what color.

Got it together
Title:  Got it together
Description:  WACG01, a Gang Mills based crew that handled the coal from there to Ithaca, has combined with a train that was left in Ithaca yard by a previous crew. The whole train, now with four units, will head up through town to the NYSEG Milliken Station north of Ithaca. Note the hoppers and conveyor at far left. The other coal customer on this line was Cornell University, high above Cayuga's waters. Conrail would spot loaded hoppers here, which would be emptied into a pit, with the conveyor carrying the coal up to be loaded into trucks for the ride up the hill to the college. There were 17 cars spotted here this day.

On the Lehigh Valley
Title:  On the Lehigh Valley
Description:  There was not much left of the LV west of Allentown. Some local activity on the line was most of it, but the through trains were largely a memory. West of Sayre, the line was largely abandoned and pulled up, except for one segment that had some heavy duty traffic, from Sayre to Ithaca, which saw three coal trains on a typical week. Heres one of them behind a pair of SD 50s rolling along next to NY 34 near Lockwood.

Title:  Block limit stations
Description:  Since the Ithaca Branch was Form D territory, there were block stations to designate track blocks. We see a 103 car UNE train for Milliken passing two of them. Rena, on the left, governs the Ithaca Branch; Croft, on the right, is on the Lehigh Secondary. There is also one at the other end of the secondary where it meets the Southern Tier, designated Wave, in Waverly.

Coal on the old LV
Title:  Coal on the old LV
Description:  One of the few remaining segments of the Lehigh Valley in New York was the line from Sayre PA to Ludlowville, north of Ithaca. It was a good moneymaker for Conrail, as it hosted three coal trains weekly going to the NYSEG plant there, as well as salt loads out from Cargill. Occasionally Cornell would get coal for its boilers. This train has just changed ends at Sayre and is sitting by the former station, now a restaurant, as it gets ready to go north.
