Back to the yard
Title:  Back to the yard
Description:  The eastbound I encountered earlier has dropped its train and returned to Waterloo with their caboose for more action. We see the lite GP 9s rolling under the ex CGW at the east end of the Waterloo yard. Note the "GP 20" model plate on the front of 977. This was once a common EMD feature that had disappeared by the mid 60's. I bet there are a lot of these in railfan attics and basements.

First generation power
Title:  First generation power
Description:  The BN at the time had a lot of first generation power still at work, and there was a good representation of it at Denver. One such was this SD 9 at the turntable. There were a lot of then there that day.

Ready power
Title:  Ready power
Description:  A pair of units at West Burlington, fairly common power for the era. The GP 20s would last a lot longer than anyone would figure, some working into the 90s. The SDP45 would end up in a lease fleet, and I would see it again on the D&H in Binghamton NY. Seen from train 6

Title:  BH 1 and the TP&W

Title:  Line up in the yard
Description:  A line of NYSW units sits at Binghatmon. Most will not see the road again on the Susie Q. The 2062 was one of the GP20's that came from the TP&W; the 4006 is one of the original four units from 1988, and was sold to the P&W along with the others.

Headed for home
Title:  Headed for home
Description:  NYSW BH 1 has done its interchange work with CP, and is now headed back to its yard downtown with its transfer cars behind a pair of GP 20s from the TP&W, which it operated for a few years in the 1990s. The view is from St Clair Av, at the old bridge abutment for Conklin Av, left in place when the new overpass was built.

Love/hate
Title:  Love/hate
Description:  I love and hate short lines all at the same time. There are some interesting operations, and in days past, a lot of interesting power, especially back in the late 70's when the likes of Conrail were selling off underused and unprofitable branch lines, and they were also casting off a lot of odd and obscure power. At the same time, a lot of them run on an erratic basis, often tied to one or two customers, or when the connecting Class 1 brings some cars to the connection. This makes them hard to catch, especially if you're an outlander, though, as photographer Ken Karlewicz noted about the NYSW years ago, "living near the tracks doesn't guarantee you'll see trains." So it was with great joy I found this Pioneer Lines train rolling slowly on an old Wabash branch toward Napoleon as we were driving east on US 24, headed toward Toledo and the Ohio Turnpike. Once in a while, you get lucky!!

Long time, no change
Title:  Long time, no change
Description:  Sometimes, when a Class 1 sells or abandons a line, the infrastructure or signage stays in place for a long time. Such is the case with this long time sold off Wabash line from Toledo to Fort Wayne, now active for a short distance in Ohio. Pioneer Rail 3001 rolls 12 cars east toward the end of track and a connection to CSX-ex B&O in Napoleon, passing a sign that is at least 40 years old, and possibly a lot older, given that the N&W merged the Wabash in 1964.

Rickety
Title:  Rickety
Description:  One of the features of long sold off branch lines is often the lack of track maintenance. This is not nearly as bad as some, but still, the stick rail is showing its age as the train rolls away through a tunnel of trees.
