Got the juice |
Description: |
OJT, the Tropicana orange juice train, rolls north at AF. Typically, even numbered units faced north; somehow 138 got turned and is running backward. The train will terminate at Tropicana's Kearny NJ distribution center, where trucks will take the juice throughout the northeast. The cars will return south as they are unloaded, and are not returned as a unit train. |

Dark side |
Description: |
I must have dozed off in the car. This was not uncommon, as I worked nights most of the time, and would head out on a railfan trip after working til midnight or so. By the middle of the next day, I was pretty tired, and the sitting that goes with railfanning would put me out-til a train showed!! Heres a southbound RF&P train passing Alexandria, caught on the run at the station. |

In the 80s, containerization had not taken over the intermodal world to the extent it has today. This 79 car train of TOFC flats was typical, seen passing the Alexandria station. To the right, a DC Metro train rolls out of the King St station, making this photo truly intermodal. |

Two years after the NS merger, there was still a lot of predecessor power around. This set was on a train at Danville KY on the Rathole. There's more to it than meets the eye. The leader is obvious, one of the unusual high short hood GP 30's only NW and Southern got; the third unit is ex Central of Georgia and carries its C of G number. The trailing unit is actually at home; it's sublettered for the CNO&TP. |

Classic power |
Description: |
Conrail must have had a traffic surge in late 1988, as several of these units showed up in Binghamton. This GP 35 was the power for local job WABH 11. I got lucky and caught it on a sunny day. SLN 3 is at left, waiting to get out on the Tier. Check the EL gon at right. They didn't have too much longer by this date. |

Lucky catch |
Description: |
I rode the connecting train from Suffern to Port Jervis to get the miles over the Graham Line this cold day in 1984. When I got to PO, OIBU was there waiting on a crew change. Just lucky, considering all the times Id been there and not seen a road train. As usual, the sun is elusive. |

Four axle power |
Description: |
Most of the through freights I saw this day had six axle power. One that didn't was this one, which came south with four 4 axle units. Interestingly for you numbercrunchers, the two units to the right had opposing numbers. Note GP 30, number 2625, and ahead of it, GP 35 2526. A GE rounds out the shot. |

Hi hood GP 35 |
Description: |
This high short hood GP 35 was in consist on a southbound, making a set out and pick up at Pomona Yard. Hope the folks in the power department didnt get it confused with the following unit: same numbers, different order. |

Hi hood leader |
Description: |
Not a surprise on the Southern, all of whose road units were high short hood. This was not to house a steam generator, and on some units. Southern thought they offered more protection in case of a collision, though they ran most of their power long hood forward anyway, along with neighbor N&W. Thus it was unusual to see one with the short hood leading, as is the case here. The cab on this unit is also replete with Southern touches. The most noticeable is the computer check letter, in this case the "A" next to the road number. All Southern units had one, to distinguish them in the computer system in place at the time. There was a formula for assigning them, so the system was not random. Also, note the initials below the number. This engine is sublettered for subsidiary Cincinnati, New Orleans and Texas Pacific, which was the owner of the line from Cincy to Atlanta. Other subletterings were for Central of Georgia, Alabama Great Southern, and Georgia Southern and Florida, among others. |
