The Putnam Division was still a going concern in the late 70s, though its days were numbered. Service at the time went as far as an A&P warehouse in, I think, Tuckahoe. The power requirements were not extensive, and this GP 7 was more than up to the task. Seen at the Putnam Division yard in the Bronx, where the Hudson Line follows the Harlem River, and the Put goes north. Note the small Conrail lettering and can opener on the long hood. NJ Transit continued running two rush hour trains to Phillipsburg NJ, as well as a mid day run, until 1983. Here one of the rush hour trains is ready to go from Newark Penn Station behind a GP7P-note the squared off end on the long hood of the lead unit-and a GP40P. NJ Transit adopted the paint scheme used on the EL U34CHs until it came up with the "disco" scheme in the mid 80s. Many of the fans thought this was an elegant paint scheme, and that the new scheme was not an improvement. |
