Drifting back
Title:  Drifting back
Description:  Amtraks station switcher, and ex Frisco GP 7, rolls back into the darkness of Union Station as the Cal Zephyr heads for everywhere west. One thing this Cal Zephyr has that the original did not is the Santa Fe hi level cars, seen here right below me. They were a real treat to ride in, and had some of the best leg room of any coach I've ever spent any time in.

Unsung hero
Title:  Unsung hero
Description:  The unsung heroes of Amtrak are the non passenger units. They power the work trains that help maintain the infrastructure, never getting the glory, but without them the railroad could not run as well as it does. This one is seen from a NJ Transit train at Elizabeth.

Title:  Dutch door riding
Description:  Back in the era of older equipment, it was possible to ride in the open Dutch door, something that would probably get you arrested now. It was a great way to watch the action, and always had a good breeze

Grab shot from the water
Title:  Grab shot from the water
Description:  Dad was on an around the island boat trip with some friends in August 1973, and was able to get some rail action, though not all of it well composed, probably due to being on the bounding main. He managed this shot of an Amtrak work train as it moved onto Hell Gate.

Unsung heroes
Title:  Unsung heroes
Description:  Even if they are orange. The work train units are relegated to a track away from the main part of the yard. But without the wire train, nobody goes anywhere. This pair of aging GPs keeps the place moving, so all those high speed electrics can run 100 MPH.

Stone in winter
Title:  Stone in winter
Description:  Track maintenance was a full time job on the Corridor, due to the constant pounding the track structure got on this high density railroad. Thus, we have a ballast train in action in December. It is on the run around track at Penn Station, waiting for a shot at the main track.

Among the items they have here at Cape May is a pair of LV painted F 7s, a CNJ GP7, a PRR GP 9, some RDCs and a few other items. We see one of the LV Fs along with the PRR and CNJ units.

A ghost from the past
Title:  A ghost from the past
Description:  A D&H Belden Hill detour train pulls up the connector from the D&H Penn Division to Conrails Southern Tier Line at Jefferson Jct behind a mix of power that looks deceptively like a vision from the past. The reality is that the patch paint over the former road name has worn off, allowing the prior owners name to bleed through. Nobody was complaining!!

Put power
Title:  Put power
Description:  The Putnam Division was still a going concern in the late 70s, though its days were numbered. Service at the time went as far as an A&P warehouse in, I think, Tuckahoe. The power requirements were not extensive, and this GP 7 was more than up to the task. Seen at the Putnam Division yard in the Bronx, where the Hudson Line follows the Harlem River, and the Put goes north. Note the small Conrail lettering and can opener on the long hood. And how about those PC trailers at left!!

Ex CNJ power
Title:  Ex CNJ power
Description:  A pair of ex CNJ units readies for the evening rush at Harrison. The heritage is obvious on the trailing unit, CR 5679, as it still carries the CNJ "toothpaste" scheme. The lead unit is not as obvious-you have to look at the end of the long hood to see the squared off section housing the steam generator to see it's a former CNJ GP7P.

West end
Title:  West end
Description:  In August 1978 I rode the Broadway from New York to Chicago. At the time, it was still a main freight route to the Windy City for Conrail, and I recall a number of things from that trip. One was outrunning a white Firebird that was pacing us on adjacent US 30. The other was that we seemed to meet an eastbound every 30 minutes or so. There also was some local traffic on the route, as we see here. A solo GP 7 works a siding near Valpo.

Two units to Phillipsburg
Title:  Two units to Phillipsburg
Description:  NJ Transit continued running two rush hour trains to Phillipsburg NJ, as well as a mid day run, until 1983. Here one of the rush hour trains is ready to go from Newark Penn Station behind a GP7P-note the squared off end on the long hood of the lead unit-and a GP40P. NJ Transit adopted the paint scheme used on the EL U34CHs until it came up with the "disco" scheme in the mid 80s. Many of the fans thought this was an elegant paint scheme, and that the new scheme was not an improvement.

First generation goodies
Title:  First generation goodies
Description:  Were passing the Chicago engine facility just outside Union Station, where first generation power is holding sway. A pair of Es, a GP 7 from the PC Valpo train, and an SW 1 shop switcher dominate the scene, quite typical of the time. Note the building in the background, the Continental Paper Grading Co. I had no idea my teachers were sending my term papers here to get graded. I thought they did it all themselves :-)
