By the hour
Title:  By the hour
Description:  The big new thing at this time was "power by the hour", where railroads would lease diesels, with payment based on horsepower hours. Since technology now allowed for a real time record of actual usage, it was possible for this type of billing, more accurate than a HP times how long the engine was gone billing. BN leased a group of B39-8s on this basis, and we see two of them at Cicero, under the mercury vapor lamps, making the colors a little off.

Second life for a leaser
Title:  Second life for a leaser
Description:  In the late 1980s, power by the hour was the big new thing, with GE and EMD both maintaining fleets of that nature, both going to work on BN. The GE fleet had LMX reporting marks, with the units numbered in the 8500 series. After they came off lease, the fleet scattered, and the engines were found all over, among other places, on the KCS, and here on a New Mexico short line. This one is at Hobbs.

Holding out
Title:  Holding out
Description:  This southbound was holding for a meet north of Gentry, waiting to move down the siding til the nortbound was at the south end. This way the trains would not block the several crossings in town more than needed for the meet. An NREX lease unit, formerly a GE lease fleet unit, leads, followed by two more GE's and a rebuilt SD 45.
