The signal at MP 245 was hard to get, since you had to either walk down the tracks, or cross a farm. A long lens could get you this shot from the crossing in town. Actually, not too bad. Train 391 passes as the fall color wanes. |

Classic scene |
Description: |
This shot shows some of the remnants of the south end of Bevier St, on the east side of Binghamton. The signal protects what was at one time the crossing at BX, where train 390 is rolling north in this view taken from alongside the Agway plant, seen at right. Agway was an active Conrail customer at the time of the photo(and sometimes got grain in Erie boxcars). Were standing on the main track of the DLW Syracuse and Utica line, which crossed the D&H where the train is moving. Behind me out of sight is the yard that serviced that line, YO yard. It was abandoned long before this photo was taken. The train is on the D&H, which bears to the east into Bevier St yard before going up to Belden tunnel and the capital district. Bevier St was adjacent to the DLW YO yard. The crossing at BX was removed in the early 80s and changed to a set of crossovers, with the tracks now forming a wye that allowed trains to go either to the ex DLW East Binghamton yard, or to the Buffalo Runner, the line this train is on. The NYSW, which had acquired the DLW trackage north of Binghamton, connected to the Buffalo Runner through a switch, under 390's third unit, to access its yard at the east end of Eries QD yard, near Liberty St. In 1990, the overpasses on Bevier St were modified, with both the NYSW and CP going onto one bridge that was high enough to clear a standard 13'6" truck, eliminating the two D&H spans and the DLW bridge to the west of those. The NYSW now used the D&H alignment to reach its ex DLW line via a connection north of Bevier St, with the DLW line through YO yard abandoned. The signals remained up-there's one on the D&H side as well-into the nid 1990's, though they had been inactive for many years by that time. |

Waiting to get in |
Description: |
Lack of yard space sometimes made it necessary for trains to be parked outside the yard. This BFOA is on Conrail track 3 waiting for space in the yard. A yard crew will come out and get it when theres room. NS power was typical. |

Switching the stacks |
Description: |
Sunday morning found the same unit, BNSF 1643, with a cut of double stacks, which it was shoving into a yard track. Belen is not only a major class yard, but is also used for block swapping. |

OIBU in the gloom |
Description: |
Heavy overcast is not unusual in the Tier, but the trains run anyway, so I was out shooting pictures. Today OIBU has a pair of NS units trailing its GP 40, showing that NYSW doesnt have a monopoly on the Thoroughbreds. The ex Erie freighthouse is peeking out from under the Chenango St overpass. |

Deepwater local |
Description: |
Virginian had a line that went to Deepwater, on the Kanawha River, to interchange wtih the NYC. During a trip to chase C&O 614 in January of 1985, I lucked onto this run on the line. It was around 0730, really too early for much light there, but I took the shots I could. |
