An ex NW unit shares the engine tracks with the class unit for Southerns GP 38-2's, still in its original garb. Nice looking pair, especially this long into the merger. |

Big plant |
Description: |
The Southern local job works the R J Reynolds plant. Back in that era, when a lot more people smoked than now, and tobacco was a primary contributor to the state economy, this was one of the larger industrial facilities, providing many jobs, and a lot of business for the railroad. We see a typical Southern unit working the docks. |

Strasburg power |
Description: |
The power that was on the Strasburg Local that day is now back in Manassas, tied up for tomorrows activity. Note the type B trucks under the GP 35's, the result of being used from trade in Alcos. For those of you who remember when MTV used to actually run music videos, youll recall Steve Winwood had a song out in the early 80s called "Back In the High Life Again" that featured a Southern Railway train switching. This was the train, the rail sequences shot here in Manassas. |

Still Southern, mostly |
Description: |
Two years after the NS merger, there was still a lot of predecessor power around. This set was on a train at Danville KY on the Rathole. There's more to it than meets the eye. The leader is obvious, one of the unusual high short hood GP 30's only NW and Southern got; the third unit is ex Central of Georgia and carries its C of G number. The trailing unit is actually at home; it's sublettered for the CNO&TP. |
