Split signals |

Not only is OIBU splitting them by going between them, but they are two different types. Where Im standing was where the Erie RR Waverly station once stood, til it was wiped out in a 1967 derailment. But for that, youd likely see a pair of semaphores here. |

Reading bridge |
Description: |
Rockville was the best known, but not the only bridge over the Susquehanna at Harrisburg. The line to Hagerstown MD was part Reading Lurgan Branch, and part PRR Hagerstown Branch. This 146 car ENRO, a run through to NS and Roanoke, originated at Enola, did the grand tour of the capital, then went south on this ex Reading line, crossing the ex PRR Rockville Bridge, then back on this ex Reading bridge, reaching it via a connection at CP Capital, where the ex PRR connected with the Reading from Rutherford yard, then out of service. |

Between the signals |
Description: |
The same BUOI we saw at Arkport now passes CP Corning after working at Gang Mills. Hes shed some power, now with only his two lead units, the trailing two dropped at Gang Mills yard. Note the curved concrete on the bridge at far left. This is the 1951 alignment that moved the tracks out of the city. The Erie station built at that time was at this location, the platform between the two main tracks, as can be seen from the space that still exists there. The building was down below at street level, with a parking lot at the end of one of the local streets. It was torn down about the time of this photo. The DLW was adjacent to the present tracks, on the right. It was abandoned after the EL merger in 1960. This location was formerly known as West Glass, and was the end of the west leg of the wye that was formed by this connection to the Corning Secondary, which went north from this point to join the Chciago Line at Lyons. |

BUAL |
Description: |
Conrail changed the symbol on its train running the Lehigh Line several wimes over the years. For a while in the early 90s it was BUAL, originating at Frontier Yard in Buffalo, running the Tier to Waverly, down the connection to Sayre, then east on the ex LV to Allentown. Here it is rolling 69 cars into Gang Mills, seen from the overpass at the west end of the yard. Thats NY 417/US 15 in the distance, an expressway that connected with NY 17 at Gang Mills, and ended just south of the exit for Addison. Now it is part of I 99, running on the alignment of US 15 all the way to Williamsport. |

6 axle GE |
Description: |
My trips to Jersey were somewhat sporadic, and often were tied to riding the many routes across the Garden State, and not necessarily toward catching the freight action. Im glad I rode all I could at the time-the equipment and some of the routes are gone-but looking back, I wish I had spent more time staking out the freights, which also had some interesting power in those days. I did not see many 6 axle U boats, but once in a while I'd get lucky. This one was on a freight at Kearny yard, seen from a passing DLW train between Hoboken and Newark. |

Head end helpers |
Description: |
Trailvan and auto rack trains typically got helpers on the head end, due to the train handling tendencies of the long cars, especially on the many curves. Today an EL SD45-2 does the honors. |

Flying over |
Description: |
The Pennsy had the good sense after WW 1 to design for high traffic, high density railroading, not wanting to get caught off guard should there ever be another time of great demand, and wanting to avoid another situation where the USRA took over operation of the railroads, as in the war. Thus they built a lot of multi track with flyovers, rather than at grade crossings. This proved to be marvelous foresight, as the PRR handled monumental levels of all kinds of trains during WW 2. It also had the added benefit of making them a much more efficient railroad than they would have been otherwise. A pair of SD40-2s is on one of the flyovers coming off Rockville Bridge and into Enola, passing over tracks that will lead to the Middle Division. |

CNSE |
Description: |
Conrail hosted a train that ran from Montreal to Selkirk via the Montreal Secondary and Dewitt-essentially an all NYC route. Powbr from CN ran through, such as this CN North America unit leading past CP 285 on the west end of Dewitt Yard. It caught up to the previous days edition, which was at the east end of the yard as I shot this. |
