Pushing to Jamaica |
Description: |
An Oyster Bay train has made its stop at Mineola and the MP 15 on the east end is now pushing to a connection with the rest of the world at Jamaica. This was standard power for some trains on that line in the 80s. Note the parlor just ahead of the diesel. This was the train set that had the subscription car for the high end commuters on it, now returning to Jamaica. |

Bring on the snow |
Description: |
A major snowfall was predicted for this day-the NY area got over 14"-and many places let their employees out early, including mine. Instead of going home like any sensible person, I went out to shoot train pictures. As the storm was getting started, I caught this Oyster Bay train blasting through New Hyde Park. By 6 PM, things would be thoroughly bogged down in the snow. |

Westbound at the station |
Description: |
The better known station of the two in Glen Cove was Glen Street. It was adjacent to NY 107, and also was featured in a Maxwell House commercial in the late 70s/early 80s. The Glen Cove station was a more attractive building, but back in town, and did not get the exposure. Heres a westbound Oyster Bay train making a stop there. |

By the tower |
Description: |
Long Island had a number of towers still in service in the 80s. One of the busier ones was Nassau, just east of the Mineola station. It controlled a pair of crossovers west of the station, and the junction with the Oyster Bay Branch, as well as the interlocking at Locust Valley, where the branch goes to single track. At one time, it also controlled the switch to the line that went down toward Hempstead along Franklin Av in Garden City, which curved to the right of the building with the ivy at far right. That line was abandoned in the 1960s. We see a westbound Oyster Bay train coming off the branch behind power pack equipped MP 15 172. It will make its stop here, then run into Jamaica for NY and Brooklyn connections. |
