Title:  Rolling to a meet
Description:  We knew we would not catch the 261 at Dorsey, so went on up to Gravette, only to see this southbound TXUX train coming at us as we crossed the tracks to set up, seen here with downtown Gravette in the distance. This would be the focus of the remaining activity this day.

Title:  Snowy field

Not ten minutes later
Title:  Not ten minutes later
Description:  After the short chase of the crude oil train, we resumed our northbound trek. As we came into Decatur, I noticed the gates down at a crossing on the south edge of town. I thought it was a malfunction, since the weather had been wreaking havoc with many things this week. Turned out it was not a glitch, it was the 262 train headed south with 282 axles. I caught him in a glint of sun at the detector at MP 218.4 behind an international mix of KCSM and CP power.

Surprise!!
Title:  Surprise!!
Description:  I beat the grain train to Noel, expecting it to roll on through. I must not have heard anything on the radio about a meet, or missed the transmission. As I got out of the car, I heard a horn to the south. I had to scramble to get this shot of a 127 car 261 train approaching along Butler Creek.

Empty coal
Title:  Empty coal
Description:  The 262 met this empty TXUX train at Watts. We caught him on the Illinois River, though it was a little too early for the sweet light here in the later afternoon. A half dozen units up front are a little too many for a good train photo.

Out of the shadows
Title:  Out of the shadows
Description:  The I 181 rolls north along MO 59 approaching Anderson, catching the last spot of sun along the route as it rolls out of the shadow of a ridge west of the line. This was a spirited chase. Two units had 37 stack platforms, 20 autos, and 6 articulated racks, and made good time. I didn't beat him here by much; note the railfan chase vehicle hastily parked on the shoulder!!

Caught him, but this will be a short chase
Title:  Caught him, but this will be a short chase
Description:  Wed taken a day to go up to Joplin for a couple of things, and just to get out on one of the nicer days weve had after snow and bone chilling cold. On the return, we got off I 49 at the Anderson exit, turning south onto MO 59. As we went under the bridge just south of the ramp, there was a train rolling south. He beat us to Splitlog, but we got ahead at Anderson, and caught him going past the feed mill, dodging the shadows.

Barely into the light
Title:  Barely into the light
Description:  The sun was getting low-though there was more daylight than a month ago, this shot would not have been possible-as the southbound grain move rolled into Lanagan. I dont usually get a shot here, as I typically go for the bridge shot at Ginger Blue, but I wasnt sure there would be light there. Were rolling along MO 59 here, past the entrance to Bonebrake Park.

Long view and a big tree
Title:  Long view and a big tree
Description:  There are several shots at Baron for different length lenses. This shot is a tele view, 250mm, that gives you the stretched out train and a view of a large trackside tree, which at this date has not started to green up. One of my great frustrations with the KCS is the lack of colorful trees. Almost no redbuds, and few Bradford pears for spring color.

250-0
Title:  250-0
Description:  The wide angle shot here is of the train passing signal 250-0, which KCS relocated here from an earlier position a bit to the north a few years ago, which made it much more accessible for the C&S forces. They did a similar move a couple miles south with the signal at MP 252, which was moved from a position on an embankment, to the crossing just south of that milepost.

County barn
Title:  County barn
Description:  There used to be a body shop here. Adair county picked up the property when the shop folded, and now uses it for a maintenance base for road equipment. The tracks here are on a short steep grade, coming out of a speed restricted curve that slows them considerably. Its kind of a straight on shot, but an easy one. The slow speed also makes getting ahead of the train for a shot at the signals at CP North Stilwell easy, or passing the station, about 1.5 mile south.

Oil train DPUs
Title:  Oil train DPUs
Description:  I caught a 110 car oil train at Decatur with these CP units working as the DPU, capping off a NAFTA consist. How so?? The leader was a KCSM gray GE, followed by a couple of the US assigned units, though one of those was former TFM. Everybody can play!!
