Freight power |
Description: |
The power for the freights running from Holban Yard often sat out on a ready track along the main line. At that time, C420s were the usual power on the road trains, with MP15s handling the lighter work. Heres a pair of Centuries and an MP15 waiting for their next trip east in the evening. |

Track 4 |
Description: |
Sometimes the LIRR would run the circus train across to track 1 at Queens, as it runs the Main Line to Harold, where Amtrak power takes over. Today, the movement director has decided to run it on track 4, since it will go to Yard A, and not be handed off to Amtrak. It will take the freight bypass tracks on the south side of Jamaica station, then run the Montauk Branch, entering Sunnyside Yard A to back down to the old staging yard for the LI City ferry. There it will spot the cars for unloading. |

Typically, the push pull sets on Long Island ran with the power pack on the west end. This one seems to have gotten turned around, as the MP 15 providing train power is facing east, with GP 38-2 272 on the west end. The Stony Brook station is one of the more attractive stations on the island, surprisingly small considering it's adjacent to the SUNY Stony Brook campus, out of the photo to the left. |

One of the new developments since I moved away from NY City five years earlier was a retro paint scheme, somewhat similar to the New York State colors used from the mid 60s, when MTA took over the railroad from the Pennsy, til 1977 when the blue and white scheme was adopted. Here, MP 15 161 rolls away from the camera in the new scheme on its way to Oyster Bay. |

Straight shot |
Description: |
The LIRR Main Line is straight as an arrow for 17 miles from Jamaica to Hicksville. There are not many crossings in this stretch, and most of those are in Mineola. West of Mineola, there are four. The first is Herricks Rd, where we see this westbound Port Jefferson train approaching behind an MP 15 power pack. Herricks Road was the site of one of the more infamous incidents on the LIRR. In 1982, a van with ten kids-all late teens/early 20s-was rolling toward the crossing here. The gates were down, and there was a line of cars waiting, not uncommon given that this is the only place to cross between Mineola and Merillon Av stations. The van ran around the waiting cars, and around the gates. It was hit square on by GP 38-2 265 leading a Port Jefferson train at 65 MPH. All but one of the occupants of the van died in the wreck; one was the daughter of a NY State senator. To no ones surprise, alcohol consumption by the driver was a contributing factor. |

Early in the morning |
Description: |
An FA power pack and what will eventually replace many of them, an MP 15, stand in the yard at Oyster Bay. The MP 15 will lead a later train. The FA will go out shortly, with me riding the left hand seat as part of a LIRR program to familiarize riders with the diesel operations on the railroad, a PR program that they did in 1979. |

Blowing past the platforms |
Description: |
An eastbound Ronkonkoma train speeds past the platform at Floral Park. Despite having platforms on all four tracks, only two trains used the ones on the main line, one westbound, and one eastbound. |

MP 15 leads |
Description: |
Some trains got MP 15s for power packs, such as this westbound on the Oyster Bay branch. Note the speed lettering numbers on the side of 165. This was not typical, and I dont know of any other unit so painted. |

Equipment move |
Description: |
Looking like 4012, a Montauk train with a long consist, this equipment move rolls east on the Main Line past Bellerose. The giveaway that its not 4012 is the MP 15 on the east end-4012 almost always had a pair of GP 38s, with an MP 15 on the rear; and that there are no parlors on this train. |

Big picture |
Description: |
This shot of a westbound Oyster Bay train shows the facilities at Queens Village. The station is along Jamaica Av, which parallels just to the north. At the east end of the station is a signal bridge. It marks the west limit of Queens interlocking, which is controlled by Queens tower, seen to the right of the train. Also in Queens interlocking limits is the connection to the now out of service Belmont Spur, which leaves the Main Line here to reach Belmont Racetrack, home of the Belmont Stakes, a triple crown event. |
